I have tried to add a second hard disk to my P4/XP machine. It came with a 1.2 G Seagate ultra ATA 100 disk and I have bought a 500G PATA Seagate. I installed the new disk, using the 'cable select' option, as the secondary disk. It seemed to work OK at first and I successfully transferred files from the original disk. Only a day later when I tried to transfer more files I got the 'delayed write fail' message. Once I get this it won't go away and I have to reboot to continue using the computer. The computer seems to work OK if I don't use the new disk, except that I have started to get messages asking me to run Chkdsk. The latest message said that C:\windows was corrupt. I wonder if this means that the original disk is about to fail?
I would be satisfied if I could transfer everything to my new disk and forget about the original disk. Unfortunately I can't find the Windows disk so I can't re-install Windows.
Any suggestions or advice would be very welcome.

Are you sure your system supports large hd?
Post exact specs on the system and what bios you are running. Generally systems built from around 2003 or so and later support large hd without problems.

I checked the bios updates for your board. There are numerous updates that address hard disk issues. I would recommend you update your bios to the latest one.

Note follow intel's instructions exactly when updating the bios. If you are not comfortable with updating the bios, I would have someone do it for you or take it to a shop to have done.

Thanks. I have made a note of my existing BIOS settings and downloaded the BIOS update. When I attempted to install it I got a message saying that setup could not find a location to store temporary files (898 Kb required). I have about 50Gb free space on Drive C.
I have also attempted to run Chkdsk/r since I keep getting messages about unreadable or corrupt file in C:\Windows. I selected the option to run Chkdsk on startup, but i got a message 'Cannot open volume for direct access'.
The computer seems to be working OK with Windows programs and Internet.
Any idea of what I can do next?

Test the hd with the drive maker's utility. You download this from whoever made the drive ie WD, Maxtor, etc.

Right, the master Slave setting is worth a try. When you say ghost booting do you mean copying bootup files to the USB stick? My problem at the moment is that I can't write to the second drive, so I can't copy files over.

My problems are multiplying! Windows installer doesn't work so I can't install programs. System restore has no checkpoints before 2 days ago, so that hope has evaporated.

sorry I diddnt make that clear, you can use a bit of software called "ghost" it runs under DOS, you can create a bottable usb stick (or floppy) with the ghost program loaded on it. when you run ghost it wil pick that you have two Harddrives attached (regardless if theres nothing on one of them) it will then give you the option to clone from the origenal and give you options on the partion sizes also for the new drive...

you should be able to find ghost on the net somewhere

warning when cloning make sure you chose the right didsk as source...

Haven't tried the Master?Slave option yet. I tried the Seagate download option first, since I didn't need dismantling the computer.
