Hi Everyone, great website!

My computer has just encountered a major hiccup. During start-up, it made some strange noises, like it was spinning fast then spinning slow, then it suddenly turned off. From what I have read, I think the hard drive is on the way out. I turned it back on, and it started up ok, but I turned it off in fear if it crashed again, all would be lost. Is there any way to back up some stuff from my comp? Is it safe to turn it on when it is on the way out like it is?

Also, for about a year the fan (I assumed) has been making noises (not all the time, sometimes just for a little while). Hard to describe the noise, kind of just like a noisy fan....

Also, occasionally get the blue screen with a 'fatal error' when trying to close down, but this too has been happening for a year or two.

And it's a pretty old computer, probably about 5 years old.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Michelle.

I back up files and pic, movies on CD-RWs, or another internal hard drive. Are you sure it wasn`t the CD drive making the spinning up noise you herd? It could have if there was a CD in the tray at the time and it was trying to read it.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

It definitely wasn't the CD Drive, because I haven't used it in months. I was planning to just back up my important files on to a USB flash drive, but I have a feeling my comp was last the time it takes me to do that.

Thanks again,
Michelle.

What backup options do you have? Do you have a second hard disk, a CD-RW drive, an external USB drive, etc?

What version of Windows do you run?

Hi,

I run windows 98, and have a one gig flash drive.

I turned my computer on again this morning, and it started up ok, I managed to save some things but was unable to work out how to save one of my databases.... now I have worked out how to save the db, so will try again. Do you think the comp is on the way out?

Thanks :)
