Daughters computer is full of malware, very annoying and beyond my ability to fix. Purchased a used hardrive in good condition, just not being used anymore. I am not interested in anything on the hard drive currently but cannot get on to it. I guess it was part of a network before and asks for a user name and password. How do I reformat it to be able to load my windows and other stuff on it?

whats the make and model of the PC
why not just re-install onto the existing harddrive from the recovery Cds
why are you replacing drive ?

also we have some experts in the virus forum maybe able to clean up - although very busy forum and may take longer

It is a dell, older one, 2004 model. I do not have the backup cd's. I am sure they can help, they have before, but I do not have the time to do that right now, it generally takes a while. I dont think she has any actual viruses, just annoying malware that keeps popping up, changing the desktop background, making it one huge web link, that sort of thing. I have windows XP ready to load, just need to be able to do it. Thanks

If you dont have the Dell recovery CDs whats the XP CD ?

If its not the correct one for the PC - IE XP home or Pro and a OEM version it may not work with the license key on the machine
Also you will need all the drivers for the machine 0 i would make sure you have them first
Whats the TAG number printed on the machine

Yes, you are correct.. I can just keep the OS that is on the hard drive, it is windows 2000. I am sure it will be fine for her. So how do reformat this hard drive so she can use it?

first copy all the data off the machine you want
NOTE you will also need the installations kits for any program installed on the PC

then use the Disks you have to restore the PC to factory condition
you may need to go into the bios and set the boot order - so that the cd is first
then put the windows 2000 recovery CD into the machine and switch on - it should then start the installation process

I would make a note of all the hardware on the PC using these programs , not sure if all run on 2000 - but you need to know the hardware in case theres a driver issue - also check online at the dell site with the TAG number and make sure you have all the drivers
