My hard drive seems to have developed a mind of it's own. Randomly, it will hang from 5 to 30 seconds. It seems to be searching for something. The red indicator light stays on solid during that time. The mouse will still move the cursor but otherwise all functions are on hold until the red light goes off. If I have input any typing during that time, it shows up afterward.
It is driving me nuts!! It happens irregularly between seconds and minutes apart. I don't have to be online or even at the computer to have it start searching. It makes no difference if McFee Clinic is active or not. I have run the scandisk and there are no bad sectors. I defrag once per month. There does not seem to be any other problems. Does anyone have a clue? I am at my wits end.

Well, first thing to try - boot in Safe Mode and see if it happens. If not, you have a program loading at startup that is causing this.

Sounds like something FindFast (part of MSOffice) would do.

It is in the Startup Group - just delete it.

You can do this lots of different ways - in Win98/ME you can just go to Start, Programs, Startup and Right Click on it and choose Delete.
