The light on my tower unit is continously on,or sometimes constantly flicking on and off very rapidly the one that tells you that the hard drive is doing something. I've not noticed this light being on continously before and the computer is responding very slowly and often freezes. I'm not sure what is causing it, I've looked in my start up list from msconfig but I couldn't pin anything there down

Can anyone enlighten me as to what is doing this?

ALT CTRL DEL and look at the process tab, what is consuming cycles and that might give a clue.
