Hard drive partition

Hi all
I have a question about hard drives.
I have a 80gig Hard drive partitioned into 2 40gigs ...partition.
the question is if one part of the partition is for OS, can the other partition be used as backup? just by any chance my PC got infected by a virus, will the other partition get infected, or If I reformat the drive, will the other partiton still have all the backup data?

any help is appreciated.

yes, The other partition can be used as a backup.
yes, It could be infected by a virus.
yes, You can format the other partition without affecting the other partition.
ie. format c: ect.
It's best to use another hard drive or another partition on another hard drive, as
the chance of both hard drives failing together is more remote.
