My computer was not powering on. Upon diagnosing I found that when I disconnect the power cable from the Hard Drive (SATA) the system gets powered on. What can be the cause of that?

I have important data on the drive. Someone told me if thats the case the hard drive may have failed and the data cannot be recovered by any cheap and easy method!

    What do I do?

When you say power cable are you talking the PSU or the Sata to Motherboard cabling? Jazz

It won't do any harm to try another cable or another SATA Port.

The problem you describe is generally caused by a short circuit on the drive controller board. As Hughv suggested, try another cable and another SATA port, but if that doesn't solve the problem I believe you will find the problem to be a shorted controller board on the drive.
