Why is it the longer I have a hard drive the more it slows down? I do upkeep like defragment, disk cleanup, and yet, it takes forever to load a program, from a cold boot to a noticeable end in running startup programs its 2mins 45sec. that is ridiculous, I've seen computers start up in 45secs. Current computer specs listed on profile. Thanks for any suggestions.

With no more info than I have at the moment, I can only majke a list of possibilities:
    • Your hard disk is packed and there is insufficient room for swap space (paging file)
    • You have gotten into adware/spyware or other malwares
    • You have loaded up a file sharing program and have been (illegally) downloading music or other programs.
    • Your machine has been turned to a spambot due to unsafe browsing activity.
    • God doesn't like you anymore.
    • You have loaded programs that put a portion of themselves into memory on every boot and these programs crowd your memory. Check your Startup group and MSConfig.

If you can back-up your files it might be a good time to wipe things clean and start over. Short of that, if it is only boot time, the last option provided earlier is the best place to start. If you are like me I am a pack-rat and stuff accumulates so the key words here are "over time". Pay attention when you download a program when it asks you if you want to tag it to the start menu as this is how it gets bogged down. So much does not need to be running every time you boot up. Security for sure does but so much does not.

I have a 2GB paging file, I am certain I have no spyware/adware or malware on my computer, i don't do illegal downloading of any programs or music, I don't have unsafe browsing habits, i visit websites that are trustworthy and have been identified as honorable websites, and i have very few programs in start up. so that leaves one option. God doesn't like me. it's the only explanation. i did a clean start about 2 months ago, can't get much more recent than that.

I have uninstalled the VMWare software which starts a lot of services, turned off Hotkey Poller ATI, can't thinking of anything else, i never used the VMWare and i have no clue how to use it, and it won't benefit me in anyway.

Yup, ran into that just three days ago.

Ran into one that was painfully slow. At first thought it was adware/spyware; but, I later found it was a failing disk. It was 9-Gigs and took 9 hours to get to 88% on formatting. Tried deleting partitions, writing zeros to the drive, repartitioning and trying again. Same result.

Replaced the disk and all is well.

well unfortunately i know one thing that slows down xp a lot is .NET which i have up to 3.0 and all the updates. I just wish I knew which ones were actually nessacary, i know i should install all the security updates, but come on, i've never had an issue with XP virus/spyware wise except for a few occassions, which were easily cleaned up with a couple antispyware program scans. but since it's been established that i either have too much software or too many friggin updates. i think i'm just going to clean my hard drive and see if that helps.
