How do I transfer entire contents, including OS from one HD to another?

    Generally you dont.

You format the new drive, install the new OS and then reinstall the programs.

There are programs such as Norton Ghost that will create a disk image but they are designed more for backup purposes.

If you are going to be using the HDD on the same computer that the OS was installed on, you could use the software that came with the drive. Well if it is a maxtor anyway. I dont know about the software that comes with other drives yet. If you are planning on using it on a different computer you will need to install a new copy of the os on that drive in that computer. First if you install the OS on two different computers using the copy of the OS it is considered Piracy and is illegal unless you have multiple user licenses. Second if you are using it in a different computer all the drivers from the original computer are installed into that OS and will cause you major problems.

What OS are you using and What brand HDD, and Computer(s) are invcolved here?
