At the current moment, I am working on a Compaq Presario V3000 laptop. I have tried to format and install many different operating systems on the laptop and nothing is working.

It freezes when it tries to format the partition.
The hard drive is a 80.0 GB ATA ST98823AS

    I have tried these disks:
    Ubuntu/Linux DVD
    Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP Professional w/ Service Pack 2
    Windows Vista Home Premium

I have tried all of these and none of them are able to format the hard drive. The hard drive went to an error about 3 weeks ago. It said "Disk Read Error" for the longest time, until I started to try and install these OS and format the hard drive. Any help?

Try a lowlevel format on the drive with killDisc, if that does not work you need a new drive.

Try the above but it does sound like the drive has died (or is dying). I suspect it's had a head crash and has done physical damage to at least one of the disk platters.

If the drive has died and you have a lot of info on it then you can get it fixed by Driver Savers. They will charge $ for the service.
