Hiya

This is from a PM from annie

hey there!!

the 'new' hard drive has win 98 on it, but when i uninstalled norton anti virus, it also deleted some other files. win knows theres a cd rom, but wont run it or the net. Therefore im using my pc to reinstall win 98, but i have to rename my hard drive as they are both called C. I will then use my cd rom to reload win 98 onto the 'new' hard drive. So i need to rename my hard drive so i can tell win which one to load onto. Does any of this make sense, or am i making life hard for myself????

Now, we may be able to do a restore. Reboot to DOS and at the prompt, type the following. there is a space before the /

scanreg /restore

and pick a date prior to the problem. Not the oldest one.

Also, I replied to your Norton query. This could help shed some light on this.

Hiya

another reply:

ok. when i go into control panel and check the cd rom it tells me its there and that there are not probs, but when i try and use it it tells me it not accessible.

When i try and go on line i can connect but cat do anything. i had a notice telling me that the ndis.vxd files were missing so i copied these from my hard drive over to the other one but still no luck.

so all i could think of was to reinstall win 98, but i have to use my pc like a mediator 'cos of the cd rom not working.

the reason i tried to get rid of the norton files, was due to the fact that we had deleted the program but it had left behind files that then caused messages during start up of windows and caused the screen saver to not work and the crash the pc. so if i go bakc and do wot u said then this will bring these files back (is this right?) if so then do you know how to fix this problem too???
You say that you had to get rid of the norton files because you had problems with the pc crashing. The thing is, ndis.vxd is for your Dial-up Networking, not Norton. So, a restore will, hopefully, bring back that file and we can troubleshoot the original problem.

now, if it osen't bring it back as sometimes your pc will not allow some restoring to happen, then we may need to remove and re-install the Dial-up networking.

The CD-ROM problem is another thing that may be resolved, another way.

Okay, to restore the system, reboot to DOS and at the prompt type the following. there is a space before the /

scanreg /restore

and pick a date prior to when you deleted the file. Don't pick the oldest date.

Yet another reply:

ok. i restarted in dos mode from my start menu. i then got a prompt so i typed wot u said and came up with a blue dos screen with dates and numbers, chose the date before i did the uninstall and then had to restart the pc again. I got just past the bit where it tells u about the primary slaves etc and then it said :

a windows device file maybe missing then a windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file regarding this device file no longer exists. then C:\Norton~1\NAVAP.VXD then press any key which i did, it then says again about the missing device file and the D:\PROG~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386 then press any key which i did. it then said it was updating the configuration and then came up with our password screen where i pressed cancel and the screen went green and the nothing else happened and everything froze!!!! i restatred the pc and exactly the same thing happened again.
Did you have any problems before you deleted the original file..ndis.vxd?

Hiya

Have you tried reinstalling Norton to see if this file is replaced, then following the uninstall provedure I gave you in the Security forum?

Also, you may want to have a look at this:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&th=675c4ec6d5742f20&rnum=2

As someone is saying that the same file was deleted.

for the bit about the registry, you will have to click the link saying Show Rest Of Message, or have a look at this:
