Hi, i was wondering if a 40gig hd 7200rpm 4mb buffer is significantly slower than one with 8mb buffer? If i had 512 mb ram..would it make a difference if i got a slower buffered hd?

Well, the only cache sizes I've seen on hard disks lately are 2mb, 8mb, and 16mb. The 2mb buffer is slower than the 8mb buffer models as a rule, and your main memory size will have no effect on this speed.
