I have a Packard Bell Pentium 1-166 megahertz. One day I got some I/O error messages and the computer stopped seeing the C & D drives. I can boot from the A drive but it still doesn't recognize the HDD. & Cdrom. Where should I start? Thank you.

GO into the BIOS and see if the hard drive can be detected, if not your IDE controller may be shot.

neither the harddrive nor the Cdrom are detected in the bios. When I boot there is only one beep after Post. Is there a way of checking the Ide controller short of replacing it? Thank you.

I'm working on a computer right now with the same problem...I moved the IDE controller card to another slot and now it is working. You might try that if it's an option.

Also, make sure you have the gray ribbons connected in the right direction.
