Hardware analogies? What are your favorite ones?

    Okay we all have been there before trying to convince someone that one thing is better than another, or explain why something doesn't work as it should. What I want to know is what analogies you use to sway peoples thoughts and get them to see the light on computing.

    I'll start with the number 1 I use when people ask me about CPUs - for example a 2.8ghz Celeron vrs 2.4ghz P4 -

    Its like the difference between driving on a 6 lane highway (P4) but going at 40 miles and hour (2.4ghz) and driving on a 3 lane highway (Celeron) at 60 miles an hour (2.8ghz). If you have a backup on the highway that takes up 2 lanes (Application running) which would you rather be on the 6 lane highway or the 3 lane highway?

    Now its rather simplistic but it gets them to see that while you have a higher number 2.8 vs 2.4 the Celeron can't handle as much prosessing.

    Don't limit this just to CPUs I want to see what people have out there cause well I want to rip off your good analogies! (Just kidding I just want to see how others describe things to non technogeeks)

    Uh, aren't you forgetting to use the phrase - all other things being equal? That is you should state in your analogy that there is an equal amount of memory for either processor when they are subjected to the same performance tests.

    In answer to your question, it depends on how much of a backup there is - since the 6 lane highway could have many more applications running with a bigger clog due to less memory than the 3 lane highway with a lesser number of applications and more memory. Note: I assume that the highway lanes are either separate processes or threads, not twice as much memory from 3 lanes to 6 lanes.

    LOL I know theres more to it in ANY analogy. Most people realize that analogies are used to give an idea. No I don't mean memory when I mean lanes I mean the processing capabilities of the processor to perform same time taks and the numbers there are just rough plucked out of the air numbers not to equate to anythign pysically on the processors themselves.

    So you got any you tend to use?

    OK, I'll pump up my post count.

    "Raise your refresh rate. Running at 60Hz is like looking at the ocean through a picket fence, running at 75Hz, no fence."

    Yeah, I know a vertical fence but you come up with these things on the spur of the moment. :D I was fixing a machine at work for a person who just couldn't get the idea of what a refresh rate was and that was just yesterday so this was a new one.

    A - "Well, you have dial-up. Picture two pipes. One is an inch in diameter (dial-up), the other is two feet in diameter (broadband). Both deliver the same thing: Water (data). However, the larger pipe can deliver much more water in the same amount of time than the smaller pipe."

    When my 12 year old became interested in electronics at age 10 we started out with a simple circuit, battery > resistor > LED. So we needed to choose a resistor, and I explained voltage, current, and how resistors work...

    Voltage is how high the water pressure is, higher water pressure = higher voltage. Resistors work like different sizes of water hoses. The smaller the water hose, the more resistance it has. And current through an LED is related to water pressure and the size of the water hose... if you put a balloon on the end of the hose, you want to adjust the water pressure or size of the hose so the balloon doesn't fill up to fast and burst but not so slow it never fills up. Im not sure how filling a balloon with water and lighting an LED are related, but he got it.
