If you downgraded that computer from Windows Vista to Windows XP, you need to upgrade it to SP3 and then install the post-SP3 high priority updates so you can get the operating system completely up-to-date before you install a bunch of programs and extras in that computer.

Why were you trying to uninstall Java 6 Update 31 anyway?
What you really needed to do was to install Java 6 Update 34 so it can overwrite and replace and update it.

That's odd. Filehippo stops at Java 6 Update 33. It's not even recommending Java 6 anymore as the latest version.

It also stops at 33 on the official Java website.

The Java website is recommending Java 7 Update 5.

    http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_6.xml

Why is Java 6 still available, unless you're having trouble with Java 7, which I'd doubt.

Why can't you update to SP3?

The new versions were just released yesterday afternoon, so I'm sure some sites haven't gotten up-to-date yet.

From what I've read, Java 6 will reach "end of life" in February 2013 and only Java 7 will be offered.

For now though, both versions are being kept updated, so I'm still using Java 6 in all my computers.

I think they're simply confusing everybody. I've been using Java 7 for a while now without any glitch.

They've even fixed something I had trouble with for over a year. I now can make it check for updates in the Java Control Panel, which wasn't working anymore, for whatever reason. That just started working with the latest update. (y)

I haven't tried using Java 6 and Java 7 side-by-side yet, but some others have.
