I have been unable to find any information on this problem anywhere on the internet. I have a 2 GB graphics card that is more than capable of running many games (Skyrim included), but I constantly have severe game choppiness issues with almost any game I try. I have tried Dota 2, Heroes of Newerth, Skyrim, Dead Island. The strangest thing I have found so far is that my dedicated video memory is extremely little compared to my shared system video memory and I have been unsuccessful in finding out why this is happening.

    More details about my computer:

Do you have more than one graphics card? If yours is an add-on, how did you disable the other (which doesn't seem to be disabled from what I see)?

What size is your power supply?

Yes, I had an on-board graphics card, and I disabled the on-board once I had installed the NVIDIA myself. I did that through device manager. I pretty sure my graphics card is enabled correctly since its the only one I see in device manager. And it shows up in my BIOS menu as well. My power supply is 500W. Thanks for the fast reply Elv!

Did you see any place in BIOS to disable the card, or to choose whether to load AGP or PCI as primary?

Some boards require a jumper on the board to be moved to disable onboard. Your manual should tell you about that, or at least what each jumper on the board is for.

What other video settings did you see in BIOS? Did you see any settings for the PCI clock?

That card can draw 71 watts all by itself. Do you have many other peripherals powered by that PSU, or powered USB devices? Depending on what else is there, 500 watts might actually be borderline.

It certainly would appear that your onboard card isn't disabled correctly.

Also, if your 8400gs has 2Gb dedicated RAM on the card, then you may well have some performance problems (not guaranteed, just might) in some games. This is becaus you are only running a 32bit Operating System which can only address a maximum 4Gb of memory, this included video RAM etc. Out of that 4Gb available, approximately 300-500Mb is permanently assigned to system processes, then your video RAM has the next priority, so thats about 2.5Gb of address space gone already. This only leaves 1.5Gb of space for your actual system RAM to use, so effectively you will have 2.5Gb of RAM installed that will never be utilised, unless you upgrade to a 64bit Operating System that is.

To be perfectly honest, in my experience, 1Gb of RAM on a graphics card is plenty most of the time.

Okay, I can usually only run ANY game in low graphics settings. I could also upgrade to 64bit OS if necessary, but I figured since I only have 4 gb of RAM, and a 32 bit system can use UP TO 4 gb of RAM, that it wasn't really necessary to upgrade to 64bit. Also, I don't really have a need for more RAM because my computer runs perfectly fast including games, it is just the graphics that lag.
    @Evandil
I actually only starting doing research for this a few days ago, and when I went into BIOS to look at my settings, My BIOS hadn't been updated since 2009 (around when I built the computer myself). So I didn't even have options for overclocking or graphics card settings until I installed the new BIOS (which I did last night). I dont think I have any manuals left for my computer parts (since I built it awhile ago), but can easily find the manual in a .pdf online. I only run 4 GB of ram, USB mouse, USB keyboard, and USB headset. My wireless is through a network card I installed a few months ago so I don't use a USB wireless adapter. So other than those USB items, the PSU only powers the standard parts of my computer (which does not have anything exceptional other than quad-core, and the graphics card). I will look to see what BIOS settings I have now and check for settings for the PCI clock. (I am relatively new to BIOS so I may need to direction to find exactly what your looking for. Thank you I appreciate the help!

Okay, when I enter BIOS, I tab to the advanced tab and select. THen I have JumperFree configuration, CPU confiugration, Chipset, Onboard devices configuration, PCI PNP, USB Configuration. I click on Chipset and have NorthBridge and Internal Graphics. I click on IG, and have Primary Video Controller, Internal Graphics Mode (Set at UMA + SIdeport), UMA Frame Buffer Size (Set at Auto), Sideport Clock Speed (Set at DDR3-1333MHz), SP Overvoltage (Set at Auto), Frame Buffer Location (Set at Above 4g), and AMD 785 HDMI Audio (Set at Enabled).

Hope this might help find what you were looking for?

The Nvidia GeForce 8400GS uses a 64 bit memory interface...
    doesn't matter how much memory it has...512MB, 1GB, 2GB.
Unfortunately, a ~$40 video card just doesn't have the horsepower for serious gaming.

So the problem wasn't with my graphics card at all. I just need a new one. Any have the best bang for your buck? Probably looking to spend around 150-200$. But how does low bit memory interface explain the strange:
Total available graphics memory 1919 MB
    Dedicated graphics memory 512 MB
    Dedicated system memory 0 MB
    Shared system memory 1407 MB

You are correct, a 32 bit OS can only address up to 4Gb of memory but that is all memory installed in the PC (RAM and dedicated graphics memory) which, in your case = 6Gb as you have a 2Gb Graphics card. The Graphics RAM has priority over system RAM so that will be allocated to the available 4Gb space first, leaving only 2Gb for everything else then ontop of that 300-500Mb is permanently assigned to System Processes which are needed to run Windows. So, out of the 4Gb of System RAM you have installed your machine can only actually use about 1.5Gb of it.

Can you provide a link to your exact card (the 8400gs), it reads like it only has 512Mb actually on the card but is setup to share System memory also, which can allow it to have up to 2Gb.

As tom has said, the 8400gs is a pretty low end card, more RAM on the card can not compensate for its low ability unfortunately.

For us to provide a reasonable alternative we really need to know the exact make, model, wattage and approximate age of your current PSU as that will be a significant factor. Also, exact what size case do you have (mini, midi, full tower etc). A small case will also limit your choices dependant on the amount of actual physical space available.

The GeForce GTX560 would be a very good choice for a ~$200.00 gaming video card.

As Tanis has pointed out, there are other factors to consider FIRST:

This video card is approximately 8.25 inches long and takes up two slots.
    -Will it fit your case?
This video card requires a 450 watt power supply with (2) six pin power connectors.
-Do you have an adequate power supply or can you fit one in your budget?

    @ harisaziz,

    1) Try installing current video card drivers from Intel's website.
It looks like you're using the default Windows video drivers

    2) In the future, it would be a good idea to create your own thread.
Jumping into someone's thread with a completely unrelated issue
just makes things cluttered and confusing.
