I was helping a friend with her computer and I noticed in the tray the icon for Safely Remove Hardware. As she didn't have any devices plugged in (ipod, etc.) I was curious so I looked to see what was listed. The only thing listed was her internal hard drive. Which I thought was really weird. Why would it be listed there and how can I/she get it unlisted?

Thank you in advance to any and all who can help me out.

It is probably because it is an SATA hard drive and you can "safely remove" those. Sometimes if you have a partition set up on it, it will show up on the list. Its not a big deal, you can leave it.

If the controller supports hot swapping, it will show up as a removable drive.

Just as a guess, is this a nforce/nvidia chipset motherboard?
