Do the headphones have a built-in microphone?

Are you plugging them into the Headphone or Microphone jack?

I ran across one like that a few years back. Come to find out the very tip of a set of headphones has broken off all the way down in the bottom of the headphone jack. I had to remove the motherboard, desolder and remove the headphone jack before I discovered that tip down in the bottom of the jack. Actually ended up having to peel back the metal enclosure a bit before I was able to wedge that tip out of there. It worked! Owner was ecstatic. :)

I am not saying that is what's wrong in your case. It's just something that can happen.
