headphones

    I know it's something simple, but for some reason my computer speakers do not cut out when the headphones are plugged in and I am sure the headphone jack is OK.

    The usual method that is used by 99% of systems has a switch embedded in the headphone socket that is operated by the action of plugging the headphones in, so it will be simple as you suggest.

    Another socket sounds like the cure. The switch is integral to the socket.
