This old PC is really dragging . Booting up takes forever, windows explorer is practically not working and IE too takes forever to get onto the net and to move around. I sus[ect that there are several programs running at all times that are killing performance.

My goal is to turn this old PC into just an e-machine. I want to get rid of everything that is not needed. All I want is : access to IE, to leave installed my usb wireless adapter and the ability to load a decent antivirus program.

Here is the attached log, hope you can help again.

I'm not a security guru by any means, so will leave your hijack this log, to those who can read it far better then me.

As for the booting up issue, can i suggest that you go to start / run, type in msconfig, hit the startup tab. this will bring up a list of all running processes, in teh background.

Check this list against http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html, and take off all the programs that are running constantly, that are not needed.

for spyware programs, a good list of the ones to use are, webroot spysweeper, spybot search n destroy, microsoft anti spyware, spy doctor, adaware, crap cleaner / window washer. this list is by no means exhaustive, some people use more, some less.. on a personal note, i use all the above, and a couple others too. They are all available for free, if you search hard enough on google. As for a good anti virus, recommendations are AVG which is free, and trend (housecall), which is a online scanner.

I would wait until your hijack this log is cleared, before using these programs, as one may offset the other.. If im wrong in saying this, im sure someone will tell me :)

Can you also please give us some specs of your machine, so that we can be in a better position to help you more..

Can you work with the log that I pasted. I know that this is from an old version of HiJack, but I do not think that my PC can currently download a new version at this time. I am barely able to connect to the internet, This message is from my other PC.

Hi..I read mine and friends logs..but here we have some very skilled log experts and it's best they read your log..(sorry).best to make sure advice is A1..
You old log will not tell what is currently running on your system..you could D/load Hjt log onto a floppy disk..and run it on your other machine..

Jayeliot:

The startup list isn't bad at all. I only see 2 entries in the O4 list of running processes that don't need to be running in the background:

SSDPSRV (ssdpsrv.exe)

AIM (aim.exe)

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, click OK - "Startup" tab, remove the checkmark from those 2 entries, click Apply - OK, then reboot when prompted to.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the processor speed and how much RAM is installed in that computer?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleaning out the buildup of temp and other junk files and cleaning out the buildup of spyware, malware, browser hijackers, etc. can go a long way in reducing problems and improving performance.

Make use of the links that Blues Harp provided for:

Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

The startup list looks real good now.(y)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yahoo Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger are 2 chat programs that are known for installing other programs in a computer without the user's knowledge, so be aware of it.

Start up may look good, and I guess the new log looks good also. But this PC is in serious trouble. Booting up, which was never fast, has now gotten anemic - 5 to 6 minutes to boot up ; moving around in Windows Explorer takes forever to open a file folder ; just opening the control panel takes 2 to 3 minutes ; and of course IE is doing quite badly.

I have run ad-aware and spybot - no serious problems detected. I am currently running Trend Micro House Call.

My problems began several months ago when I attempted to load PCillan into this PC. The program took all the RAM (?) resources available causing much problems. I uninstalled it, but things have never been the same. And now I am once again running very slowly.

Any suggestions or sites that can help me reset this PC back to bare basics ? All I need is windows 98, windows explorer and IE and a cheap or free antivirus.

If all you need is to run win 98se, explorer, ie, and a antivirus, then the easiest thing to do by far, is to format the drive, and then reload windows, all the updates etc, and then download AVG.

Can you please let us know the specs of your machine, cpu, ram etc.. as a upgrade of these could well increase your pc speed.

I have to agree that doing a hard drive format and fresh install of Windows 98SE will get rid of all the problems and start things out fresh. I just did that to my Compaq Presario 5030 a couple of weeks ago.

As long as you have a full version Windows 98SE CD and a fully-bootable startup floppy disk and know how to do it, you'll be back in business in a couple of hours.

If you do decide to do it, make sure that you have the software drivers for the modem/network card before you start so you'll be able to get it working and be able to get on-line.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the processor type and speed, and how much RAM is installed in that computer?

What is the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?
