Hi Everyone,

First of all, thanks for providing such a useful forum!

My girlfriend's laptop has been acting up lately. When she clicks on search results in Google (among others), she gets redirected to completely unrelated websites like wiseto.com or nomoresurfing.net.

I ran a scan on the laptop using AdAware and ThreatFire and did sort out a few suspicious objects, but the re-directing is still occuring.

Here is the HiJackthis log:

Hi cybertech!

Thanks for your reply!

I've downloaded and run ATF Cleaner as per your instructions.

For some reason I can't run MB Anti-malware! I've looked up various topics on the net regarding fixes for successfully running the program, but none of them seem to work for me, including:

- renaming the .exe file
- trying to run in safe mode
- uninstalling/reinstalling in safe mode

Any ideas? Is there an alternative program to MB Anti-Malware?
Please let me know. In the meantime, I'll keep trying to get it to run.

Thank you for your help!

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

The P2P programs you have installed expose you to risks because of the nature of the P2P file sharing process. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

I suggest you go to add/remove programs and remove all P2P programs from your machine!

1) Fix your System logs.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...-open-the-event-log-when-viewing-system-logs/

2) Click Start at the bottom left corner of the screen
Click All Programs
Click Accessories
RIGHT-click on Command Prompt
Select Run As Administrator

In the command window type the following and then hit enter:
ipconfig /flushdns

You will see the following confirmation:

Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.
Now type exit and press enter to close this window.

3) Start OTS. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says Paste fix here and then click the Run Fix button.

Code:

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
Post that information back here.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

4) Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Kaspersky online scanner uses JAVA tecnology to perform the scan. If you do not have the latest JAVA version, follow the instrutions below under Upgrading Java, to download and install the latest vesion.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      [*]Archives
      [*]Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator".)

Hi Cybertech,

I've removed all the P2P applications I could find, fixed the logs, flushed the DNS cache, and updated Java.

I've tried to run the provided fix in OTS but it seems to immediately freeze up and stop responding. OTS reads the code, but a certain portion is left remaining in the 'paste fix here' box.

That remaining code is:
[Files/Folders - Modified Within 30 Days]
NY -> hpqp.ini -> C:\Users\Public\Documents\hpqp.ini
[Alternate Data Streams]
NY -> @Alternate Data Stream - 116 bytes -> C:\ProgramData\TEMP:D1B5B4F1
NY -> @Alternate Data Stream - 127 bytes -> C:\ProgramData\TEMP:1CA73D29

Is this normal? I was going to run a Kapersky scan, but thought it best to get the OTS fix resolved first.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Cybertech,

I hate to say it but I'm even having trouble with the Kapersky scan!

I can't seem to connect to the 'update source', and eventually Kapersky tells me that the installation failed.

For what it's worth, I've noticed that I haven't been able to download other anti-virus/malware programs either. (Spybot, Superantispyware etc.) It's like I'm being blocked somehow.

This is really getting frustrating

I hope you can help me out!

Thanks again.

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new Hijack This log.

I downloaded Cureit and ran the program as per your instructions.

The program did cure and quarantine several files, but when I tried to save a log, I got a BSOD saying "Bad_Pool_Header." Then the computer restarts.

I've tried scanning twice with the same result, taking four hours for each scan :(.

Could I just screen cap or write down the items in the test results window?

I noticed that the computer is only SP1, should I update immediately or wait until the problems are resolved?

Ugh, sorry about this, it seems this comp is in rough shape. Thanks for helping me!

Run HJT again, Right click and Run as Administrator, put a check in the following:

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Click Start at the bottom left corner of the screen
Click All Programs
Click Accessories
RIGHT-click on Command Prompt
Select Run As Administrator

In the command window type the following and then hit enter:
ipconfig /flushdns

You will see the following confirmation:

Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

Now type exit and press enter to close this window.

Restart the machine and post a new hijackthis log. Also please give me some feed back on how things are working, troubles you are having, etc...

Hi Cybertech,

After removing the requested file in HJT, I found that I was still being redirected and was still having problems connecting to sites (like the Kapersky problem).

For some reason, I thought I'd try and run Malware Bytes again, and this time it worked! It found and removed 15 malicious files.

Since the scan, I haven't had any redirect problems though I'm not totally sure the system is clean. I'll continue trying the things that weren't working to see if any more problems persist.

Below is both a new HJT log, and the log from Malware Bytes before I deleted the files.

Malwarebytes found the dns hijacker so that's a good thing. Remember when using Vista you should run such programs by right clicking and selecting run as administrator. That will give you the best results.

I would suggest getting rid of LimeWire, that will only cause you grief.

Now you should Clean up your PC

If you have no other problems I can help you with feel free to use the Mark Solved button at the top of the page.
