I have had a wired 100t ethernet in my house for 4 years. I used a linksys dsl 4 port router for the the last 2 years without a problem. I just bought my daughters new laptops both intel centrino. A gateway and an averatech. the Averatec has XP Home, the gateway XP Pro.

I am trying to set up wireless. I bought a Linksys WRT54g 4 port wireless router. The Averatec with XP Home works wieless without a problem. The Gateway often (Most of the time) will not sign on to the wireless internet. Yet when plugged in, wired ethernet works fine.

The systray will show the network icon and give you a bubble saying it is connected and the signal is good. but no internet. If you click on the icon it will show you a graphic of the connection. the details tab will show you a strange IP address and subnet mask. if you look under network connections there is NO red x through connection. If you try to repair the connection it says it could not get an IP address. Today I went under configue the adapter and shut off the wireless, the turned it back on . the the internet connected right away. I could problably solve this by using a perminent IP address. but i would prefer to leave the system versitile.

Thank you for reading this. any help is very much appreciated.
