I am currently running windows 2000 advanced server. I think there may be a virus or something else on the system. I tried doing a reinstall of windows but it won't let me. I want to completely erase the hard drive. How can I do this? That way when I start up again I should be able to put the disk in and roll.

Boot the system with a boot disk or bootable CD. A Win98 boot disk will work. You can use the "format" command to erase or format the disk. Make sure the BIOS is set to boot off of the floppy or CD ROM BEFORE the hard drive.

Sorry, mobo beat me by seconds. :D Mobo's link will work.

OK, you have a few options, if you have a windows 98 boot disk lying around use that to do a format.

or for a more thorough clean go to the website of your HD manufacturer, or just go to maxtor as they have a good formatting tool and make a boot disk, reboot with the boot disk and away you go

here is the link to the maxtor powermax utility page, this utility includes a lowlevel format tool use this to blow away your old data, all of it, it resets your HD to 0's so if you have partitions or anything it will all be lost. otherwise use a win98 boot disk, or a partition magic boot disk if you can find one
