I am running window XP Pro and suddenly I am having some major issues. Not sure if it's a virus, spyware or something else. I've run AVG free virus scan and AVG free spyware and got nothing out of it...I've also formatted my hard drive and re-installed windows and STILL have the problems. Here's what's happening...if ANYONE can get this fixed for me, you're a real pro.

First off, I can't drag and drop anything. I can right click and copy (or cut) then paste elsewhere, but I can't move desktop icons around, or drag them to the recycle bin, or any sort of drag and drop. Also, very frequently, all the sudden, I won't be able to click anything. No shortcuts, no quick launch icons, NOTHING! My computer acts kinda like it's hung, but the mouse works fine, just when I mouse over a button or icon, I get nothing, same thing when I click the button or icon...nothing....however, I have oddly noticed that if I press CRTL+ALT+DEL, then simply close down the task manager right away, without doing anything, my PC will let me click icons and buttons again, but still no drag and drop.....after a few minutes it'll mess up on me again, then CTRL+ALT+DEL and close task manager again to get back in business...

Anyways, PLEEEAASE HELP! I can't get my PC to a working order even by formatting the HD so I need a real pro!

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to TSG....

If you leave your computer run all of the time please shut it down and wait for 10 minutes and then turn it back on and after reboot try your drag and drop again.

I tried shutting down for 10-15 minutes and still no drag and drop...also, the not being able to click buttons/icons until I CTRL+ALT+DEL is an even bigger pain! Any other ideas?

I'm having this exact same problem, and it's driving me crazy.

I'm also running XP Pro on a laptop, could a recent automatic update have caused this?

It's worrying that this problem was not fixed by a format + reinstall, I was planning to do the same thing until I read your post.

    Change your mouse!!

Unplug your mouse and shut down, reboot and use another mouse

    Are you using Microsoft Mouse?

Hello. Had the same issue this week (Aug 20, 2007) on my WinXP SP2 box.

    Did the following to resolve:

    1. As the local administrator, downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 from:

    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx

    2. As the local admin, opened a CMD prompt and ran:

    SFC /PURGECACHE
    SFC /SCANBOOT

... and then rebooted to begin the scan. Keep your WinXP install CD handy; you'll need it.

Obviously, installing the drivers was the simpler of the two and may have done the trick without needed SFC.

    Keep Diving! :p

i'm having the exact same problem, it's driving me nuts.
did the last trick solve it?
i have an asus laptop with built-in mousepad, and a logitech trackball.

seems really strange to me that the problem is mouse related.
    can anyone confirm?
    thanks!

I agree look at the mouse first. Especially if you recently changed it. I had the exact same problem. Unable to move icons around the desktop. I even had problems with Java enabled websites. My issues were caused by the new mouse I bought by Micro Solutions. They did not respond to my request for updated drivers so I bought a Microsoft mouse. I wasted two weeks trying to find a virus/malware that wasn't there.

Sorry, the previous link I supplied moved so here are more recent links.

Click here for the latest version of Windows updating software:
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.mspx

To remove variants of the blaster virus (yes they are still around), use this site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826955

Microsoft supplies these free PC checkups to remove threats of viruses, worms, and spyware. Of course, using this free service is sort of after the fact (like leaving the barn door open then trying to herd the horses later). If you connect to the web then you should have a good anti-virus software installed that will detect and repair it immediately. One day you may have problems that can't be repaired so easily.
