I have a red shield with an X in it on the bottom right of my toolbar. I'm attaching a copy of my AVG Scan report and a HiJack this log. After my latest AVG scan I "selected all actions" and they were supposedly quarantined. This thing keeps trying to access the internet - I've blocked it (I think) with Zone Alarm, but I keep hearing a "pop" sound every 10-15 seconds, like it's trying to access the internet. When that happens, it interferes with what I'm doing - example: when it pops while I'm drafting this thread, the cursor disappears and I have to use the mouse to click it back to where I left off. Any help getting rid of this would be appreciated!

Here is my AVG scan report:

New Information: Alerts from AVAST are attached - I have tried "Move to chest", "Repair" (message says afterward it failed and can't repair), and "Delete". This alert still keeps popping up.

When I opened Avast and tried to go their website I got a message that said that it was highly dangerous to continue to operate without some sort of scan that required a restart. So I chose the option to do that. At the beginning of the boot process, an AVAST scan started (the screen looked like it was in safe mode). When it found infected files, there were a number of options. The only one that would work was "Delete", so I chose that one. When it finished, it continued the boot process. I was not able to save or find the scan. It obviously did not resolve the problem, but I've done another HJT scan and here it is:

Another update: I haven't gotten a reply from anyone (almost been a full day), so I downloaded Stopzilla and did a scan. It then removed about 18 infections - the red sheild has disappeared and the problems & pop-ups have disappeared. A new HJT scan is attached (since having comleted the Stopzilla scan and removal).

Please download http://www.malwarebytes.org/affiliates/thespykiller/mbam-setup.exe (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Then click Finish.

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Press Update to make sure the latest database is loaded.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
Please include this log in your next reply.

Below is the HJT log. Question: I had been using AVG Anti-Spyware (and currently also use Avast anti-virus & Spywareblaster and Zone Alarm). I have had several problems this year with malware and periodically, my AVG would say that my license had expired, while at the same time showing a date in November when it will expire (which is correct). I'd have to re-enter my license number into the registration box of the program and it would then indicate that everything is current. I have also periodically had to reinstall it (with advice of the publisher). So, I've de-activated AVG and installed Stopzilla. I'm getting the idea that no one program will catch everything. Is Stopzilla a good alternative?

My intention is to not reactivate AVG and not renew it. Just so you know: I've read the security suggestions at this website and have followed many of the suggestions - I periodically do a Secunia scan and update any outdated programs that it finds; I manually update Spywareblaster pretty regularly (Avast updates itself); I open Zone Alarm and block any sites that pop-up that I'm not familiar with. I do have a roomate who uses this computer, and he is computer illiterate, so I don't know what he does or what choices he makes when he's surfing. I've tried to tell him not to go to any site he's not familiar with and to make sure that he tries to "X" out of any pop-up he doesn't understand.

Oh, no, I'm not having any more problems (the problems I noticed disappeared when Stopzilla deleted the infections it found).

AVG antispyware is out of date & just about at the end of its useful ,life & no longer fully supported

It has been integrated into AVG antivirus V 8 now
I have never been impressed with stopzila & don't find it a very effective antimalware program

Unless you have already purchased stopzilla, I wouldn't buy it but stick with free version of MBAM & do regular scans

AVast is fine as an Antivirus but no free antivirus has the same detection & fixing capabilities as a full paid for security suite from a major antivirus company like Kaspersky

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
    for XP http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?page=8
    or for Vista http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial143.html

That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable system restore & create a new restore point. Now Empty Recycle bin on desktop

go here http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?page=3 for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

and scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Then pay an urgent visit to windows update & make sure you are fully updated, that will help to plug the security holes that let these pests on in the first place

I urge you to consider purchasing the protection component in Malwarebytes to prevent further infections of this nature
Open Malwarebytes Antimalware, select the protection tab, press test to see if your system will benefit from it & if it says yes, then you can press the purchase button
