    Hi everyone,
I have just had to format my system, as it had some sensitive stuff on it, anyways, I backed up all of my important data using the windows backup facility in windows xp pro. Now when i go to try restore all of my data it comes up with "the backup has unrecognised data and cannot be used." can someone please help me with this dilema asap

    Welcome to TSG.....

One thing about backing up your data is that you never really know if the backup is good or bad until you go to use the restore for it. I do not really know if the data can be restored but have several things that may guide you along.

First thing since this is a Microsoft product I would suggest calling their tech support and querying them about this problem even though it might cost a few bucks, they might even wave the cost for this.

I did a Google search for this and here is the link:

I personally do not use this thru Microsoft for backing up my system info but do use Acronis True Image

I do not use Microsoft backup because I also lost tons of data years ago from it since it does not seem to be upward or backward compatible at that time and not using it now leaves me at an advantage.

The Ws' "backup" doesn't backup everything. And as noted, really has a bad rep. For data files, not system and programs, the free utility "Cobian Backup" is regularly recommended here at TSG. I use it weekly with ease.
