My computer keeps shutting down at random times. Sometimes it's because it gets too hot, but at other times, my case and components are cool, but it still shuts down. It can even shut down during startup or while in Safe Mode. It does not matter what program(s) is(are) running either. I have installed new drivers and new programs, but rolling back to a restore point prior to that does not help. I am posting a HijackThis! log. I tried to find C:\WINDOWS\minidump, but it could not be found, so I can't enclose my latest Error Logs.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

It would really help of you posted your exact system specs; ie make and model of mb, brand and speed of ram, brand and wattage of pw supply, etc.

Next if you are working on the system in your sig, then I would open the case and check the hsf mounting. The socket 478 will sometimes break the hsf mounting clips.

Here are my revised in-depth Computer Specs:

    Computer Specs:

    Windows XP Pro SP3
    Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Prescott 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 Single-Core Processor CPU (Model #: BX80546PG3200E)
ASUS P4P-800E Deluxe 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard
    RealTek AC'97 Audio
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Graphics Card (Model #: NX6200-TD256)
    1 GB Kingston ValueRAM (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory (Model #: KVR400X64C3AK2/1G)
300 GB Western Digital Caviar SE 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s HDD (Model #: WD3000JD)
    Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI
    LITE-ON DVD-RW SOHW-1693S IDE Drive (Master)
ASUS DVD-E616P3 DVD-ROM IDE Drive (Slave)
APEVIA X-Infinity ATXB6KLW-BK/420 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 420W Power Supply

I built my computer back in 2005, so unless the hot sink was broken during one of the many times I have moved my tower, I don't think it was broken when I built it. It's really dusty in my tower. Would that have any effect on performance??? How can I safely clean inside there???

    Yes, dust will cause overheating. Here is what I would do;
1 Open the case and give it a good cleaning with a can of air [available at any computer or office supply store]
2 Once done with that, take a good look at the hsf and the mounting. The mounting brackets will sometimes just break. If all looks well, then go ahead and pw ON with the side cover off. Make sure ALL fans are running.
3 Now post your temps. Since this is an asus board, you can use asus probe or check your temps in the bios.

BTW if it is really dusty, you might want to take the system outside to blow it out. Saves getting your house full of dust.

I will dust my tower tomorrow. I need to pick up a can of air. My MB temp is 36 C / 96 F and my CPU temp is 87 C / 188 F and is past my pre-set threshold of 72 C. I just installed an new sound system and that's when my trouble started. I unplugged my speakers and my computer is now stable. Any thoughts???

All fans are working as well. Probe only monitors my CPU fan, though. I can feel air flow from my three case fans (one on top, one on the left side, and one in the back). And I can see my CPU fan spinning, and Probe is saying it is spinning fine.
