I m supposed to generate an automated call from a computer to a hard wire phone as a part of my internship. but i have no clue as to how to do that. the requirement is to query a database first and see if any customer needs to be called, if yes then a call is to be genrated to the customer and the details of his profile in the database are to be read out to him. can someone help me on generating a call from the computer to the customers? (my boss is not willing to help me at all  )

It can be as simple as a pc with ivr software and a two port fxo card from dialogic.

Basically you figure out how many ports are need to support simultanious calls. You start that process by doing some math (googlr erlang), then that determines number of ports.
With that you interconnect ivr via pots, or ds0 level circuits such as PRI or DS1, all the way up to SIP or SS7 trunks.
