Whenever i turn on my computer (for the past few days) i get the following message.." hole has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "

I get more information which says .. AppName: iedll.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.8 ModName: iedll.exe
    ModVer: 1.0.0.8 Offset: 00002f5

    Also,the following..C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

I have Window's XP Home, and i can't restore to an earlier date due to the fact that i deleted the restore points to save some space on my hard drive.Any suggestions?

    Welcome to TSG, gwbm

iedll is normally associated with Browser Helper Objects, some legitimate, sometimes not so good

Go to this site, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

    open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it
Come back to TSG, Right Click and paste its contents here

Someone will then advise you what to do next

Coolwebsearch frequently leaves other nasties, I still suggest that you post a hijack this log. It is what I suspected, but wanted to check. Rule 1 in this game is "never assume anything"

The icons that were put on your desktop and backup's of the files.

    1) Open Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> delete cookies, delete files (select off-line content), clear history. Then click ok and exit Internet Explorer.

    2) Read http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.html then download and run SpyBot. Make sure to get the updates for SpyBot before you have it scan your computer. After you scan and remove anything SpyBot finds, make sure to click the Immunize button and OK and then click the Immunize button in the right pane.

    3) Update and run your Anti-Virus program (NAV or MacAfee), if you don't have an Anti-Virus program installed on your PC use one of the free ones here:

Keith,I will download Spybot.I already have ad-aware 6.0,Spyware Blaster and HijackThis.Do you think i should still get it?

I have Norton's Anti-virus 2002.My subscription has ended, but i think i can still get virus definitions.Would you use the Anti-Virus i have now,or use one of the online ones?

    ------

    Putasolution,

What can i say,i mean, you don't have to help me and you are.I hate to keep posting the logs for you guys to see,so is there any way that i can learn what to delete and what not to?

    Thanks.

If I didn't want to help I wouldn't come to this site.
That is what we are here for, to help others just as we have been helped

However I can help quench your thirst for knowledge, our very own prodigy, brendon did a great little tutorial on what hijack this can do

Don't be afraid to ask for help though cos we don't mind while you're learning :D

Waste our time? Not likely, this may sound sad, but it's kinda fun, and quite satisfying once you can interpret these logs and help someone out
