Hi everyone... I'm having some computer trouble, to say the least. I'm running Windows ME on a Compaq Presario desktop. It's about five years old. As soon as I boot up and periodically during use, we get the error message:

"Exp has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL"

Can anyone help with this? We're also having a lot of trouble with spyware and popups. I'm posting our HijackThis log, so if anyone can help, it'd be awesome.

Uninstall AutoUpdater from Add/Remove Programs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then download and run the following:

Ad-Aware SE: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it.
First, in the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.
Then, in the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.
Then, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
To start the scan, click the Next button.
When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next).

SpyBot S&D: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode).
Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates.
Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems''.
Anything that it finds, Click ''Fix Selected Problems''.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/EliteToolbar-Remover.shtml

This tool is to be run in Safe Mode.

To boot into Safe Mode, start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen.

Run the remover.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reboot to Normal Mode.

Post a new Hijack This log.

JuneBuggy:

Greetings from a fellow Compaq Presario user(I have a 5030 and a 5900T).

---------------------------------------------------------------

The startup list in that computer has way too many unnecessary programs running in the background. Other than

ScanRegistry
SystemTray
StateMgr
Antivirus program entries
Firewall program entries

very few other programs need to run in the background. A trimmed down startup list will solve a lot of problems and will increase overall performance.

I don't want to interfere with getting your log issues fixed, so we'll put that on hold for right now.

I'm having some trouble with the fix- every time i run AdAware, it freezes up on me. Anyone think they can help? There's absolutely nothing in my logs to indicate any reason why this would happen

I'm not surprised it locked up. There was a good amount of infection in the Hijack This log.

Please do as Candy suggested and run it in Safe Mode.

JuneBuggy:

When you run a full system scan with AD-AWARE, it may appear at times to freeze up because the numbers will stop increasing for awhile. Just be patient and leave it alone.

Something else that might help is to disable your antivirus program before you start the scan. Also, leave your computer alone and don't use it while the scan is running.
