Ok, been trying to figure this for the last 2 days.

I was unfortunately attacked with the AntiVirus XP 2008 'fake' Anti Virus programme.

The only way I could stop this thing from popping up and over running my laptop was to go into my registry and remove all files to do with this programme.

After a restart I thought everything was solved, till I did a full system scan with Norton.

3 virus' were found, but I cannot remove them. The only message that shows is:
2 x 'Downloader.MisleadApp cannot be removed from an unsuported file'
1 x 'AntiVirus2008 cannot be removed from an unsuported file'

The only option I get for those is to 'Review' them.

Anyway, thanks for hearing my ramblings, any help (as long as it isn't too complicated) in removing these problems will be greatly aprechiated.

    Thanks

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to Combo-Fix.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

    Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

Half way through running Combofix my computer crashed. After that whenever I turned it on the only option given to me was to do a full system restore.
I had to do it as there was no way of bypassing it.

Unlikely I know, but is there anyway I can get my stuff back?

Not if you did a full destructive system restore. Weren't you warned about losing your data before you continued?

I was warned yes, but I had no choice.

Everytime I turned my computer on the only option I was given was to do a complete system restore.

It wasn't a windows option, it was a main Packard Bell option (which is the make of my computer).

A work colleague of mine reckons there might be a way of recovering some of the information. But I don't think this is the case.

I'm going to pop into a computer repair shop tomorrow and ask, but thought I'd check here first.

For the record, I'm not using the mentioned computer for risk of loosing more data if it is on there somewhere.

There is no way of recovering my data then?
If you don't ask, you'll never know!

I understand there is software that "may" be able to retrieve some data but you're correct that you should use the PC as little as possible as whatever may be recoverable will get overwritten.

Now, this could have been avoided if you had left it the way it was and posted from another computer as ComboFix makes a backup of the registry that can be restored but that is no longer the case here.
