    Hi Remedy330,

For the short term, I'll bet that something can be done to keep that Sony Vaio running to meet your needs...... There are a lot of really good folks on this site that will help you get that computer just hummmmin along and even protect it from disabling its functions.

I am going to move this thread to the Networking forum (from XP).

Re Acer: can you get into the BIOS (or Setup)? I think you indicated that you tried to get into the Recovery partition but weren't able to "Recover" to factory defaults. At what point did you fail? Are there any more details about that attempt that you can give us?

Re Toshiba: please start a new Thread in the Hardware forum for that laptop.

Re Sony: Please show the following for when you have internet access and again for when the wireless is disabled.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

barkerb23, consider yourself lucky I only gave you one infraction for a useless post with incorrect advice.

How do you expect to install the OS on a netbook whose screen goes black almost immediately and for which the OP does not likely have an installation DVD or USB flash drive?

How do you expect to install the OS on a computer that just beeps upon power on? And do you know that the OP has an installation disk?

And, finally, why would anybody in their right mind advise to install the OS for an intermittent wireless networking problem without doing the slightest bit of trouble shooting?
