I get several messages from Norton Antivirus that they detected a virus called Downloader, or downloader.trojan. Norton says sometimes it's able to remove the file and sometimes not. I've tried all their suggested steps, including running Norton in safe mode, looking for files identified as trojans (and I can't identify any except the random tmp files that it keeps trying to delete). The virus is located in C::\WINDOWS\TEMP\tmp[random numbers].tmp.I t's also hard for me to download removal tools, as this virus is really slowing down my computer. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

I have a Dell XPS with Windows XP.

    Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Nothing showing up there so restart in Safe Mode.

    Empty the C:\windows\temp folder.

Restart and run SpySweeper and post the log back in your next reply.

No infections were found after running SpySweeper.

I deleted all the files in c:\\windows\temp; yet 2 files keep returning:

    WGAErrLog.txt and WGANotify.settings

I posted a few days ago about my problems with the downloader.trojan virus, and it's back again. I'm on Windows XP, with a Dell XPS system. Norton Antivirus has found some infected files, and has not been able to remove them. Here's an example of details of one infected file:

The compressed file loader.exe within javautil.zip within C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\menu.jr-57e3489c-39189f09.zip is infected with the Downloader.Trojan virus.

I also get this message with the bot.exe file, located in a very similar spot.

Previous attempts to have Norton scan and remove this virus have been unsuccessful. Please help!

    Here's the HijackThis log:

I cleared the Java cache, then ran Norton Antivirus, and still get 6 infected files: 3 each of loader.exe and bot.exe, in the same locations as before:

within C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\menu.jr-57e3489c-39189f09.zip is infected with the Downloader.Trojan virus.

I had Norton fix them, but when I went to restart, the same box pops up saying Norton found and deleted a virus that is located in C:\Windows\Temp\[random file].tmp

    What now?
