About 2 months ago I bought a router to hook up to my Aunts cable modem...Everything was fine..She was online on her computer and I was online with mine...About 3 weeks ago I noticed that my startup was taking about 15 minutes to start and all my programs were taking forever to load...I just can figure out why..

I used my AVG, my spyware program, defragged, deleted temp files and even used Startup inspector..I'm stumped....I was told to use a registry cleaner but when I do I wouldn't know what to delete with out screwing up my system..

    Compaq windows XP
    224 mb of RAM
    AMD 3200
    1.80 GHz

Thanks for any help you can give

Hi and welcome to TSG! :) It could be the RAM....224mb isn't much.

    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Nothing malicious jumps out at me, but there are a lot of outdated programs.

Run Hijack This and click Open the Misc Tools section.
Click Open Uninstall Manager > Save list and save the log to your Desktop.
A list of programs will open in Notepad. Post the contents of this log.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) - JRE 6 Update 20 -"
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
    • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u20 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java) in the name.
      Meaning these:
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
      Java(TM) 6 Update 18
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
    • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
      • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
      • Next, click on the Delete Files button
      • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        • Applications and Applets
          Trace and Log Files
      • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
      • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
      • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

To test your Java Run-time, you may go to this page http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
When all is well, you should see Java Version: 1.6.0_20 from Sun Microsystems Inc.

Afterwards, we can trim down your Startup list and see if that helps.
    Post a new HijackThis log.

You also are running an old version of Internet Explorer and have an old Service Pack.
Internet Explorer is up to version 8 and you need Service Pack 3.

Is it really necessary to upgrade to IE 8 with add ons?...I've been using Firefox and Google Chrome..IE always seemed too slow..

Quick question...Is there anything about having too much pertection for your puter?...When I ditched AVG's old version, restarted it booted pretty fast..Then when Installed the new version it still moves okay but feels bogged down...Thanks for the help again

Click Start > Run > type msconfig

Select the Startup tab and uncheck the following items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RTHDCPL] RTHDCPL.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [F5D7050v3] C:\Program Files\Belkin\F5D7050v3\Belkinwcui.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Update] "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Yes there can be TOO much protection. But in your case, you only have AVG and SuperAntiSpyware.

Annnnd I guess I don't need to do the msconfig part because it's already been done.

That should help with boot time.

I'd still consider throwing some extra RAM in there.

And, no, you don't need to upgrade IE if you don't want to. IE8 isn't that great anyway. You're better (and safer) with Mozilla.

What's the model name and model number of that Compaq computer? If you don't know for sure, advise what the product/part number is that's on the sticker. We need to determine how much RAM that computer supports and what type module it uses. It actually has 256 MB, but it's showing 224 MB because 32 MB of it is being dedicated to the on-board graphics controller. Regardless of what performance tweaking is done to it, it's going to continue to run slow with only 224 MB.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in too.
