My son installed a game on my laptop when he had access to it. I uninstalled it (or so I thought) to free up some space on the hard drive using the games uninstall program. He later tried to reinstall it but couldn't as a folder had been left behind from the original installation and it wouldn't let the game rewrite it. I tried to delete the folder using windows, and several other programs (file assassin, Moveonboot), but no joy. I even tried to delete it using the del command from the command prompt after closing explorer but again no joy. I'm told access is denied.
Can anybody help with a method to delete this folder and the files in it.
    I'm using windows xp home.

    Thanks

    Here give this a try:

    Hard to Delete File Procedure

    Go to Start
    Click Run
    Type in cmd
    Press enter
For renaming or Removing, use the following syntax.
At the prompt type the following
    rd FOLDERPATH.\
The special thing is ".\" is added

    Example:
If the folder is C:\ayush.. (Two periods)
    Then remove it by:
    rd C:\ayush...\ (Folder name + .\)

I tried the command line suggestion first, I got the message "access denied" and it didn't delete the folder. I then downloaded unlocker and tried that. It wouldn't delete it, even at the next reboot. It also couldn't rename it or unlock it.

    So no joy

    Download and install WhoLockMe

Use it to try and figure out what process has it opened.

Using wholockme tells me it's explorer that has it open. When I start in safe mode and log on as an administrator I I try to take ownership of the folder, but all the boxes are greyed out. The only ones ticked are "read & execute", "list folder contents" and "read". I'm unable to tick the "full control" or any other box.
    Stumped!

From Explorer, is the folder visible?

Can you select and delete all the files within that folder?

And, lastly try downloading, installing and running HiJackThis

Run a scan and then copy/paste the created LOG file back here for review.

If you attempt to delete any, you get an in use message???

Who does WhoLockMe show as holding onto the individual files?

Sorry Whitphil, I missed your last message while I was installing and running hyjack this. I get an access denied message and wholockme tells me it's explorer that is locking the folder/files. I think a big clue is the when I tried to take ownership of the folder. In the list brought up unser security the access rights are locked to read & execute, list contents, and read. I can't untick these boxes or tick any other ones, the main one being the full control box.

Bump. I thought I'd just drop another post to bring this forward again. It's got me stumped but I have confidence that somebody out there can solve this problem.
