Last night I let Vista automatically update as usual, and when I logged in before work this morning everything was normal. However, when I returned from work just now and turned the computer on, after pausing somewhat at the 'Windows is preparing your desktop' stage, I logged on to see my wallpaper on default setting, several desktop icons missing and all my documents deleted, with only some programs remaining.

I should hasten to add that I immediately restored Vista to the previous update and everything returned, but I really don't want to go near another Windows update for a while. Needless to say I'm backing up my files now, but has anyone else had this problem before? Any suggestions or advice?
