Running xp pro.

On my desktop, I have a folder that I named Short cuts, then renamed it to my shorts.
In it I have about 30 Short cuts, arranged in rows, with 6 going across, according to how much I use them.

The problem i am having is after a few hours, or after I turn off the computer, windows resets them from Icons, to alphabetical listings. It is NOT remembering that folders settings and I am getting tired of having to re-arrange them every time I turn on the computer.

Can anyone tell me why that is happening? or how to stop windows from changing the way I have it setup?

Thanks.

Windows does that by design and you can't fight the system. You can adjust your shortcut names so that you get what you want, kinda. Just rename them and add number in front of the present name. Use a two digit system, such as 01, 02, 03, ...

The number can represent your desired priority so you'll sorta have what you want.

That takes care of the ordering problem but doesn't fix the icon changing issue. To do that you must either edit a couple of registry keys or use TweakUI to do it for you.

You need to set the maximum number of folders that Windows can remember to a higher value. TweakUI has that listed under > Explorer > Customizations. Default is 400, most people increase it to 4000 or 8000.

If you want to do the job without the help of TweakUI:

Windows XP
Delete the following registry subkeys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags
Re-create the following registry subkeys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
Create and then set the BagMRU Size registry value to 5000 in the registry subkeys that you created in Step 2.
Source for above instructions and a user assist tool from MS.

I almost had a full desktop of icons that did that and thought it was stupid adn time to get organised.

I created a few folders and stuck all the icons in that... System, Games, Music Progs, Art, Media Players and so now I have these, my computer, IE and recycle bin on my desktop - so much easier to find stuff and nicer to look at. I can see my background again!
