Hello all. I'm new to the forum and was hoping someone could help me. Yes, I understand I am in serious need of updating and I am in the process of doing so (I am using narrowband.. i.e. dial-up... so it's a bit slow to say the least).

I had a couple problems with spyware and trojans before and I cleaned up as much as I could using AVG, Spybot S&D and AdAware but who knows what's still lurking in my computer. My Display (backround) is still being taken over by the "VXD VMM... Smitfraud" thing and i keep getting errors all over the place. (I mean seriously...there was a point tonight where explorer.exe didn't load and I thought I was just plain screwed until i stumbled upon scanreg on DOS and reloaded my registry). Anyway, if anyone would be so kind as to help me out it would be much appreciated. Also, I'm picking up a new notebook soon and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to keep that safe physically and in terms of data security (spyware etc.)

Thanks much

download Cwshredder from

http://www.soft32.com/download_19014.html

Download 'SpSeHjfix'. to the desktop and then
right click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix
unzip the file into that folder

http://www.derbilk.de/404.html

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the
SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control
Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can
set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Now run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from Active Scan log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Now I've deleted everything that wasn't disinfected automatically by the ActiveScan (even to the point where IE and Spybot wouldn't run because of a missing Wininet.dll...which I quickly replaced with a fresh copy from dll-files.com). I also seem to have run into PSGuard Spyware Remover again. What should I do next?

Thank you (attached is a text copy of my logs so its easier to view)

How's your computer running now any better?

So, you deleted everything that active scan didn't delete ? Well done!

Is your internet connection working iok, sometimes this pest infects winibet.dll and you can't connect to the net?

go to add/remove and uninstall psguard if it's there, delete it's folder from C:\program files.

Download the pocket killbox

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

have hijack this fix these entries. close all browsers and programmes before
clicking FIX.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intel32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intel32.exe

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill.
In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste each of the following
lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the
X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confirmation to
delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have
copied and pasted all of these in the Paste Full Path of File to Delete box.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not
exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you
don't miss any.

Yes, my computer is doing a lot better now. I'm finally rid of that ugly blue backround image. I am running into some problems with internet explorer because for some reason at boot-up after my AVG boot-up scan, wininet.dll keeps getting deleted.

It says:
C:\attrib -s -h -r C:\windows\system\wininet.dll
C:\Del wininet.dll

Then it continues to boot normally and to get online or run Spybot I have to paste a new copy of wininet.dll into my system folder.

I've uninstalled PSGuard and its folder in Program files and run HJT to remove the entries that you've told me to remove. However, killbox tells me that intel32.exe doesn't exist.

my latest HJT log::

I'm attaching a copy of wininet.dll, unzip it and put it into the system32 folder. Follow the instructions below on what to do with it and the other one.

You will need to boot to safe mode and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32
folder and rename the infected wininet.dll file to wininet.old then go to the
C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder and copy the wininet.dll file there then
paste it in the system32 folder replacing the infected one you renamed.
After it has been replaced restart your computer and then delete the
wininet.old file.

Alright, so I've run KillBox on all of those files and none of them exist so I assume I took care of the them the first time (hooray). Neither my C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32 folders have a dllcache folder in them. I don't really think that my wininet.dll is infected, but something happens where it keeps getting deleted everytime boot-up. I have to put in a fresh copy of it into my C:\Windows\System folder everytime because at boot-up (after the AVG scan but before it goes into the Windows Cloud screen) it says:

C:\>attrib -s -h -r C:\windows\system\wininet.dll
C:\>Del C:\Windows\System\wininet.dll

there is no dll cache in 98 and no system file protection

somethintg has been set to delete at boot time and it shouldn't be so delete the smitremzip & the smitrem folder from your computer I think that has somehow corupted and is running at boot time

I haven't used 98 for so long and I am trying to remember where all the boot files are

post a start up list

open HJT press config/misc tools and tick both boxes about empty & minor sections & press generate start up list

post that back here and it should show us what is causing the deletion

It will be a bat file somewhere set to run at boot time so hopefully start up list will show what is telling it to start

ok you need to be very careful with this or you will muck up the computer completely

find C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT right click it & select open with NOTEPAD or select edit if it is available

then delete these 2 lines only

attrib -s -h -r C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WININET.DLL
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WININET.DLL

press save and reboot & it should cure your problems
