help with hijackthislog

I think AOL Instant Messenger has caused a problem with my son's computer. Got blue screen that windows could not open. Ran hijackthis log. Tried all kinds of things to fix, and it finally mysteriously started working again. But after he reinstalled AIM, got blue screen again. Only systemrestore point that lets windows open normally is one right before he reinstalled AIM. Compared with the current hijackthislog (see below), there was one extra button in the old log:

I religiously update NAV, Adaware and Spybot. Just ran all three, and NAV found a file infected with TrojanLowZones!reg but nothing else. The others found nothing. Spywareblaster also religiously updated, and have ZoneAlarm also....

Nothing has really jumped out at me from the log.

What version of AIM was he installing?
If it was 5.9...that's a pretty "buggy" version.

And what was the exact blue screen error message?

I don't know what version he installed. I deleted it without really looking at it. What version should he install, and from where? Is there a choice? We don't use AOL, so he is just installing the instant messenger facility.

The error message was something about apologizing for windows not being able to open - that it wasn't opening to protect my computer from problems. Said if this was the first time I was getting this message to restart. Otherwise to check and make sure I had the latest drivers, etc....

I am able to start up normally now, I think because I do NOT have AIM on this computer. What is strange is that I do have AIM on my computer, and it is the latest version apparantly, and he uses it there without any problems.

I've been adding more security stuff to his computer, based on the thread from dvk01 about how to tighten security settings. I added SpywareGuard and IE-SPYAD.

What should I do now? Should I try reinstalling AIM?

I just checked, and on MY computer he uses 5.939... No problems here, so why would there be a problem on his computer?

Who knows. He's out right now. When he gets back, I'll check with him and maybe get him to show me where he goes to download AIM, and maybe then I can see what version he had installed. Then I guess we can try installing one of the older versions (thanks for the link!) tomorrow and see what happens.

Unless of course someone else comes up with another idea????

I really didn't see anything in the log that could have caused it.

I think with AIM, it's different for everyone.
Some have no problems with it. Others have tons.

Okay. I did everything in the general security information post from dvk01, except for the host file. Then I tested James Levine's browser security tests. Then I used the link you provided and we downloaded AIM version 5.1

Looks like everything is okay so far. He's logged off, turned off the cmoputer, and I just turned it back on successfully. I'll cross my fingers for now. If we go through another 48 hours without problems, I'll post again, and then ask someone how to mark this thread as 'solved'.

By the way, does anyone know why everytime I change from one forum to another within TSG I have to log on again? I seem to have to log on multiple times within the same session. Not sure why, and when I am logged in sometimes it doesn't seem to know that I am logged in, even if I haven't jumped from one forum to another.

Sure do like the looks of the interface without the ads!!!!

Not sure about the logging in part but glad AIM isn't giving you problems.

We spoke too soon. The very next time my son turned on his computer, he got the blue screen again. Here is the message: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"... Nothing specific after that to identify the problem. I restarted in safemode with networking and ran aimfix from www.jayloden.com and it found:

windows\x.bat
and it said it was removing registry key "load"

These were the same things that happened the last time AIM was on the computer. But after running aimfix a second time all 3 were gone. So how did they get back again?

Right now Norton and adaware are running scans.

Norton and Adaware scans found absolutely nothing.

Let me know what you think of the hijack this log, or the aimfix results, or what I should do next...

Let's give this a try...

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

· Install Ewido.
· During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
· Launch Ewido.
· It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen.
· On the left side of the main screen click Update.
· Click on Start and let it update.
· DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode now. Perform the following steps in Safe Mode:

Run Ewido:

· Click on scanner.
· Put a check by the following before you scan:

o Binder
o Crypter
o Archives

· Click the Start Scan button to start the scan.
· During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
· When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save Report button.
· Save the report to your desktop.
· Post that log and a fresh log from Hijack This.

Thanks, but I just wanted to clarify one thing. Right now I can ONLY start my computer in SafeMode or SafeMode with networking. It won't start any other way. Will I be able to do that download in SafeMode?

No, probably not. I've asked a Moderator to take a look at this.

I'm not so sure it's Security related but perhaps something with Windows.

if you start up with safemode with networking then you can download files etc

can you post a HJT lohg from safe mode and a start up list, I want to check the drivers as that is frequently the cause of blue screens etc

open HJT press config/misc tools, tick both boxes about empty & minor sections & press generate start up list

post both logs back here please
