I'm currently on cable internet connection and up until recently I was sharing it between my pc and laptop. The pc is running xp pro and the laptop xp home. The ICS was working fine one day and then stopped working the next. I searched through the microsoft help and support to find absolutely nothing.
When I say "stopped working" I mean the connection on the pc hosting the ICS was fine but the connection on the laptop was so slow that any request for a website would time out and the only site i could access was google.
I realise this is a little vague but any help would be nice. If you want any specifications or other information just ask.

    Many thanks,
    Ruari

One possibility is malware on the laptop.

Another strong possibility is some change (even including an automatic update) to a 3rd party firewall (or security suite) on either PC.

Sometimes there are clues hidden in ipconfigs; please post an ipconfig /all from each PC.

At the time of the ipconfig /all the DOWNSTAIRS PC had NO connection to the other computer; note that for Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2 you had " Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected."

Maybe the slowness on RUARI is because the connection between them is disconnecting frequently; that would result in a lot of "lost" packets. I'd say that the most likely cause of this would be a bad cable, with a flaky ethernet adapter as second most likely.

If you have another cable to use between the PCs--I assume you are using a cross-over--try it. You could test the DOWNSTAIRS adapter by switching which one is modem connected and which is RUARI connected. You could test the RUARI adapter by connecting it directly to the modem (after changing the TCP/IP properties as below). If you do, remember to power cycle the modem when doing the switch of PCs.

On RUARI you have a static IP configuration. It apparently works OK for you, but I'd suggest changing the TCP/IP properties to 'obtain IP auto' and 'obtain DNS auto.' Then when you are using RUARI, you could tell by glancing at its IP whether it was connected to DOWNSTAIRS (IP would be 192.168.0.x) or the connection was lost (IP would be 169.254.y.z). Another way to tell the IP address on an XP machine is to go into Network Connections and click on the connection. The IP address will be in the bottom left pane under 'Details.' By keeping this window open you could easily see when/if the connection is lost.

i'll see if i can borrow another cable from a friend of mine. I'm still a little confused as i can transfer files from one to another. I'll have another look at the ipconfig's and repost them if theres any change.

If you can share files when the ipconfig /all for DOWNSTAIRS is as shown, I wanna know how! :)

right that looks slightly better to me, I think I was a little impatient in getting the ipconfig's copied.

I don't know why there is a DNS server listed on DOWNSTAIRS for Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2. Since you are experiencing a weird slowness in the other PC's internet, I suggest to get rid of that and see if it makes a difference.

To try to isolate, try some low level communication. On the laptop open a command window and type
    ping www.yahoo.com
    ping www.google.com

and any other sites you want to try. Good is to get 4 Replies; bad is to get 4 packets lost. Do it also on the desktop for comparison. If you got Replies on both PCs, compare the response times given.

If these tests look bad (i.e., lost packets or significantly longer response times on the laptop), we maybe have some type of DNS problem. Try the pings again using the IP addresses (e.g., ping 72.14.203.99) that you can get from the desktop results.

If the first set of tests look good, then it is probably some type of browser problem. Do you maybe have some Internet Options set badly on the laptop? To say the obvious, only www.google.com as a trusted site; block all others?

    Winsock fix

    (From JohnWill)

On the laptop try this Automated WINSOCK Fix for XP: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Reboot and see if the situation changes. If that doesn't do it, try these two commands.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
