Just this morning.... I am unable to view any of my saved images.... I get this message about a missing DLL file...........

C:\windows\system\MSVCRT.40DLL

This is strange because I haven't deleted anything from my computer lately and I have never had a missing DLL file on it before.

What is this file used for? Possible causes for it being missing and where would be the best place to get it and get some kind of advice on putting it in its proper place.

Thanks and Happy Holidays :)

Hi Dave,

Well, this is Windows, so sh*t happens...:D

You install and remove hardware and software, Windows crashes, etcetera, and files can easily get corrupted.

Incidentally, you also get this when your dll. has been replaced by one that's the wrong version by a program you've installed.

Try restoring the dll from your Windows CD-ROM:

I'm assuming you're running Win98:

Make sure your Windows CD-ROM's in the drive.
Go to Start/run, and type SFC.
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk'.
Type msvcrt40.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file’s location, which is probably in the Win98 folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically D:\Win98). Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System, and click OK. System File Checker looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

If you're running Millennium, the procedure is much the same, with only one difference:
1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig and click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears.
3. Click 'Extract file'.

And then proceed as explained at the beginning.

Good luck,
