All I want to do is listen to streaming music on this old box. Sound has never worked correctly...constant rebuffering on any sound application:WMP, Winamp, Realplayer, Quicktime. Having a real problem understanding the "correct driver" issues and where to find them and how to download and install them. I know I am running an older pc on dial-up but I had an older one with a 233 processor and windows 95 that would at least stream music. Here is a shot of my Belarc contents. Any help or suggestions would be deeply appreciated:

Hi, Since your thread is more about Hardware we will move to that forum.

It doesn't look like your sound device is installed.

Have you ever added a sound card to one of the slots inside the computer?

In the Device Manager, under Sound, Video, Game Controllers, what does it have? Need the whole list of things that appear there please.

Your Pavilion 6830 uses this sound chip on the motherboard:

    Controller AMC97 codec
Location Crystal sound chip (on motherboard)

HP's usually have a way to reinstall any software that came with the computer, do you see in Programs anything like HP Tools> Applications> Recovery?

You can install the sound drivers from your hard drive usually, or from the CDs that came with the HP.

Look around for this one: HP Application Recovery disk

Go here and follow the steps to reinstall sound chip drivers>

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...os=209&product=58711&lang=en&cc=us&rule=23694

    There

is a whole section at the link above about fixing sound problems, I am sure following it will help you!

Thanks for your reply and sorry it took so long to get back to you.
I could not figure out how to copy and paste the captured image of my sound devices in this window so you will have to open the above attachment link to see them. I was using Opera browser and it doesn't play well with this site.

I looked around on the hp sight as you suggested and all I could find was the same old "your on dialup so expect net congestion " type advice"... the rest...it might as well have been written in greek...almost as much techno-babble as on the M$$__t help pages. Pretend I'm a noobie and walk me through any solution, if you find one, please, because when it comes to hardware fixes and installing drivers, I can't find my pocket protector ;) . Will wait patiently for your reply. I have the original cds that came with the system and if I need to reinstall just the sound drivers (though ancient) I will need a walk through on how to do that . It has been a while back but I did attempt to update the drivers for the mb chipset and onboard sound and since I really was unsure of what I was doing at the time it is quite possible that is where the problem is . I have done online scans that tell me I need to update drivers again but I can't seem to get a grasp on which ones (ide, bus, controller, pci, FBI :D and what not) I need and how to download and install them...so any sites that will explain this to me in plain english...linkage will be much appreciated.

Good Evening metavoyer, a lot of the problem with this MS stuff is that you need so much anti this, and anti that, that the thing struggles.
You would recall W95 went like a blur using practically nothing, but those days are past.
This Puppy linux is a small distro that performs like the old W95, it needs a bit of a learning curve but should give surprising improvement over any of that MS stuff.
As far as I know most of the neccessary programs for your interest are included, the thing loads and runs entirely in ramdrive so you really don't need a hard drive, but it is nice to have one.
A 500 meg HDD works real well. (back to the future stuff, fair-dinkum!!)
Have a look at http://www.goosee.com/puppy/ if you need any assistance yell.
The file to get is Puppy Linux ver 1.0.7 Mozilla (63 megs includes everything)
    Very expensive...free!
You would need a conventional modem, not a winmodem type.
It will run from a CD or most media. User friendly, (they even send a beautiful young buxom most attractive girl in a bikini around to show you how to operate it. (for a few days)
    Cheers, qldit.

Though installing a new operating system was not the way I would like to remedy my woes with Windows I might give it a try. But, in the meantime, if anyone out there might have a fix or see something wrong with my current set up please don't hesitate to post. Much thanks.

Is the sound onboard or is it a pci card?
As Byteman said you appear to have no sound device, according to device driver the sound drivers are installed, I can only assume from this that the sound device has died somehow.
You could install a new pci sound card which will come with the drivers on a cd.

The sound is onboard, unfortunately (Trigem Pinole if that means anything to you). Could it be a setting in the bios?

If you are streaming music and needing constant "rebuffering" then your issue is the connection. Do you have a low connection speed? Everything on the internet is increasing in size and quality; streaming media cannot always play reliably on dial-up anymore.

Thanks everyone for the heads up and help. Mark this thread as dissolved not resolved. I give up. WMP9 sucks... M$$ sucks...think I'm goin' open source. I have tried everything I know and nothing works. Ultimately your right triple6...modern streams are just too heavy for dial-up... but I have a feeling if wmp9 hadn't hijacked my sound interface, with no real alternative to get rid of it, things would be different, I really am not into formatting this old machine which is the only recourse left. I can't even screw with the buffering settings in the Network buffers panel anymore because it's grayed out all of a sudden for some inexplicable reason. If anyone knows a registery hack...I am feeling frustrated enough to attempt even that knowing the risk involved. Incidently if anyone knows of a site that explains downloading and installing drivers (and which ones are compatible with my system) in human english maybe I can take something with me from this thread that wasted everyones time. I deeply appreciate the people that posted and thank you all.

Qldit...this may be a stupid question but if I just changed the driver for my winmodem could I use Puppy or do I have to install a whole new modem. Of course this is probably moot because I am seriously thinking dsl. thanks.

Good Evening metavoyer, actually I have found your post and the answers given extremely interesting, quite obviously the quality of your phone line would also have a bearing.

With regard to suitable modems for Puppy, it needs either conventional type modems or Lin-modems. (Actually I don't know what a linmodem is so I only ever use ordinary standard modems (56K) when I set this system up for others.
Extra software is supposed to be needed for a linmodem.

It is quite funny, the standard external modems are easily obtainable as used items for peanuts, and normally give better operation than a winmodem does with windows, whereas a winmodem works beter than a standard modem with windows..
As you would be aware almost every internal modem is a winmodem.
All the best with your streaming.
    qldit.
