have a laptop installed with Linux and working fine. Now on trying to install Win Xp, just before formatting on installation of XP, it shows the message Harddisk not detected. This is a Sata harddisk. Please advise what to do in order to install XP on it.

The problem is the drive being a SATA and not an EIDE.

The XP CD doesn't have support for SATA drives.

That's one reason why people with newer computers with a SATA drive and Vista who try to downgrade to XP have a problem doing it.

I've never done it, so I can't give you the steps for doing it.

You need to obtain the SATA drivers and slipstream them into the XP CD, or you need to copy the SATA drivers to a floppy disk to use in a floppy drive - if your computer has one.
