Hi im new here:)
I just wanted to see if someone could help me with my problem.
im having a really annoying thing. I try to download almost any exe file and it turns out a corrupt download. i get a lot of errors like this program has caused an illegal operation and will be shut down, "File size expected=1972043840, size returned 2161084" now the size returned is the variable file size, while the file size expected is always that number when this error is displayed. so i cant get almost any exe files working not even small simple programs like bink player or a media player codec not even a self extracting zip or something. I formatted twice and i also had my connection changed from a 56k to adsl recently and still the same problem. Could u help me in any way?
Thx.

Welcome to the board, Carnage :)

When you post a topic it's always best to include something specific in the subject title to get the best help. In this case it sounds like you can't run any program which is an exe.

Looks like you may have downloaded a virus or trojan which has altered the registry.

Have you run an updated antivirus scan?

You can do an online one here:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/

The first thing I'd do though is download and run the Exefix08 file available in an unzipped version here:

http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Only_IE.html

This may correct the problem with running exe's if it is related to a virus.

Let us know the results of the virus scan. And any time you get an error message, write it down exactly so we have a better ideal of what the problem may be.

I'm noting that you formatted; if this problem continued immediately after a format, it is likely to be hardware related; but lets run the virus scan just to be sure.

Also even before you run an antivirus scan, I'd like you to run the kil-cih tool from symantec, just in case

http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/kill_cih.html

[If you have been formatting your computer using an infected boot disk, a boot sector virus like cih will remain. You might want to try another format using a boot disk created or downloaded on another computer (for your operating system). Write protect it before using]

Here's a link concerning it. I'm not really sure what it does other than alter file sizes:

http://www.ntsecurity.net/Panda/Index.cfm?FuseAction=Virus&virusID=256

I'm looking for a removal utility; not all AV's will do it.

In the meantime I'm going to move this to the Antivirus forum until we get this sorted.

Here's a doppleganger of your problem. I don't know if there is any other way to address this issue other than what gwthompson did -- except to reformat and start over:

For those who are interested. I have finally killed off this pain in the you know what Virus. This is how I did it.
From work I downloaded InoculateIT as suggested by POPPY4. I burned it onto a CD.
I made the .EXE file 'read only'. I took it back home. Booted up my computer, and ran the read only executable from the CD. I held my breath as I clicked the .exe just waiting for the dreaded error message or virus messages to pop up. Much to my amazement, the program installed. I ran the virus scan. It not only found and cleaned all of the infected files, the Inoculate Anti-virus software picked up another 30+ infected files that McAfee never found
If you have mind to try that with InoculateIT, an unregisterable version (they no longer support it), can be obtained here:

Let us know how you resolve it, even if it's a format. I included a new link to InoculateIt at the end of my last post, if you can find a way to install it.
