At the minute my computer says it's using 3GB of RAM. It's painfully slow to just write a simple post like this or scroll up and down. I don't have much open. I have firefox running with 4 windows currently (hotmail, blogger new post no pictures, this and a page that converts killobytes to megabytes/gigabytes. I'll attach a picture of the processes. It doesn't look like it adds up to that much to me.

I've ran a defrag, hard disk scan, norton virus scan, hitman pro scan, spybot. Nothing. Got most of the way (75%) through memtest before it ran out of battery (thought it was plugged in). And nothing showed up. I'll do it again if you really think it's worth checking. The temperatures are fine too.

This is ridicolous. Slow slow!!
    Thanks in advance

I'll give it a try but I think other programs are suffering too. Not positive though. I'll get back to you with that. I've been using firefox for a long time now and it was never anywhere near as slow as this.

Still don't know what's using the other 1.5 gig or ram

You can try running a scan with Malwarebytes; thats what I use. I don't know if it will come up with anything, but it's worth a shot. I had an infection once that was similar to what you're describing.

Also, a good registry cleaner is CCleaner. Try these and see if it makes any difference.

My advice is to stay as far away as you possibly can from Registry Cleaners, Boosters, Optimizers, TuneUp Utilities... You'll only end up crippling programs and the operating system beyond repair! These programs are completely useless and will delete what they don't understand and legitimate files still in use.

Keep in mind that a program like CCleaner will always find "errors" to fix, even on a fresh Windows installation!

Why I Don’t Use Registry Cleaners

    ===================================================================

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.
    2- Run the program.
3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.
4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply.
6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

    For Windows 7 and Vista:

If Windows is denying access to the Hosts file, be sure to run HijackThis as Administrator or disable the UAC first.

According to your screenshot, you have a LOT of programs and services auto-starting and running in that computer.

Pretty high firefox usage yes. It's down to about 300, 000 now and the total memory usage is about 2GB with only skype and firefox running with 3 windows. Lots of other little programs running in background yes but they don't appear to add up to memory usage stated in performance. Does the processes not show everything that's contributing to the 2 or 3 GB figure I'm getting? It's being not so bad at the minute but if I had 6 windows in firefox open I'm sure it would go crazy again. 6 windows isn't much. I've had way more open in the past with no issues. I think the memory has problems letting go of stuff because i closed firefox yesterday and it still showed up with that large number in the processes. Later on it also had about 10 entries for plugin containers but I haven't seen that before. I've been monitoring this for a while.

Also the CPU spikes can be quite steep and uncalled for quite often. Not bad at minute. Ranging from about 5% to 30%.

Ran those scans suggested and nothing but thanks. Can't do reinstallation because I don't have the disks but I have a recovery partition but it only shows up in defrag

I'm not referring to the number of windows that you have open.

I'm referring to the massive number of programs and services that are auto-starting and running in the background - which your HiJackThis log confirms.

And I don't like the following entry, possibly malware related:

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [setup] C:\Users\JIM\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\A1ZLBZPN\setup.exe

Setup for what? If not malware related, then I think the entry should be deleted. Unless you know what it is and why it comes from the Temporary Internet Files folder? But the process might be causing higher memory usage than it should?

If you haven't the slightest idea of what it may be, I suggest having HijackThis delete it:

Make sure the UAC is disabled.

    Run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

    Put a check mark on:

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [setup] C:\Users\JIM\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\A1ZLBZPN\setup.exe

    Click Fix checked.

Restart the computer and see if it helps in any way.

I got your PM. It didn't look promising in SystemLookup.

I've got things to do and am going off-line for a few hours.
