Dsl speed depends on how far you are from the central office, but at what distance do you start noticing significant reductions in speed ? Can you still get high speed access (up to 1 Mbps) if your house is 3-4 miles away from the central office ?

3-4 miles is probably about the limit, depending on your telco

here's one company's info - look at the adsl lite section, not the .dmt (full rate).

and contrary to what the cable haters say
- adsl transfer rates are not guaranteed, they're stated as the maximum d/l and u/l and all sorts of things affect your actual usage, notably the age of the lines (ie how old is the line equipment & technology)
- old neighborhood -> probably lower speeds

try www.dslreports.com for more specific info
- you can even put in your zip code and see how close you are to a CO in the service locator section
- the forums are in the 'community' section
