I'm running XP on my work machine. I'm having serious redirection problems with I.E. Can someone please look at this?
Thank You, G.

Hi, You are running Hijackthis from a temporary folder, you need to place it in a separate folder so backups it makes can be saved there.

Just make a new folder, the desktop is OK if you create a new folder there (right click empty spot of desktop background), select New>Folder and rename the folder to HJT, using Windows Explorer drag and drop or Copy /Paste Hijackthis.exe into HJT folder.

Can you get to any online antivirus scanners?

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

If not, see below:

Fix all these with HijackThis, have NO other windows/browsers etc open: Try Safe Mode if this gives problems in Normal mode. Get to Safe Mode by tapping F8 key several times at startup or restart....select Safe Mode in the list by using the down arrow key...hit Enter. Give it plenty of time to get to Safe Mode, it takes longer and may seem to stall.
Fix these, all other windows closed, DO NOT have Internet Explorer open!

C:\WINDOWS\wininet32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctwdm32.exe---got no info for this one, it may or may not bad,, HJT makes backups, tho,in case you do need it.

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\administrator\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Your temp and Temp Internet files may be under your username....

NEXT:

Now find and delete these files in Windows Explorer, or Search for them, delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\wininet32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctwdm32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ltkrn11n.exe

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log. When you run HJT again to save the new log, look for those entries...if you do see them or any of them, do the following before sending in the log:

Start in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key several times when you first start or restart the pc....when the menu comes up select Safe Mode using the down arrow key of keyboard, click Enter, give it plenty of time to get to safe mode.

Then run HJT, and using my reply as a guide (which you will have to print or write the steps down) fix the items etc.

Then reboot normally, run HJT and post a new log.

Notice you do not have XP SP1- is there any specific reason? Did it give you a problem, if you have tried to update? Would patch a lot of the holes if you got SP1!
