Good evening and thanks in advance for your assistance.

I am trying to help an elderly neighbor with a hijack problem. I've checked all the usual suspects - strange programs in add/remove programs, cleaning the temp files, etc. - but am not making much progress. Your assistance would be very much appreciated. Following are the various log files.

    Again, my thanks.

I don't want to be a pest but thought it might not be a bad idea to bump this in case it's been lost in the shuffle.

    Thanks in advance.

The browser is still being hijacked to strange search providers when clicking on links from Google search results.

I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your help.

I`m surprised you are still being re-directed after TDSSKiller nailed the infection. Can you confirm for me if the re-directs are through Internet Explorer only, FireFox only or both?

The hijack occurs on both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

    Hiya zephyrsymphony,

Ok lets run TDSSKiller again, delete it from your Desktop then proceed as follows:-

    Step 1

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
    • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract its contents to your desktop.
    • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

    • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

    • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

    • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
    • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

    Step 2

We will continue with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    Combofix

Don`t forget Combofix must be saved to your desktop, do not save to or run from anywhere else. <--Very important

Before saving Combofix to the Desktop re-name to Gotcha.exe as below:

Ensure you have disabledyour Firewall and all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. <---Very important

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Examples of how to disable realtime protection available at the following link :-

    Disable realtime protection

Note: Do not click combofix's window with your mouse while it's running. That action may cause it to stall.

    *EXTRA NOTES*
    • If Combofix detects any Rootkit/Bootkit activity on your system it will give a warning and prompt for a reboot, you must allow it to do so.
    • If Combofix reboot's due to a rootkit, the screen may stay black for several minutes on reboot, this is normal
    • If after running Combofix you receive any type of warning message about registry key's being listed for deletion when trying to open certain items, reboot the system and this will fix the issue (Those items will not be deleted)

    Step 3

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
    Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe (Vista or Windows 7 users right click and select "Run as Administrator") and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

What i`d like in your reply :-

    • Log from TDSSKiller
    • Log from Combofix
    • Log from Security Checks

    Kevin

I ran into a few problems ... one actually. Combofix won't run because it thinks AVG is installed. I have uninstalled the program (what a mess that was!) but Combofix still thinks AVG is there. I don't know how to get around that problem. After I was done running the logs for TDSSKiller and the Security Checks, I downloaded and installed the Panda Cloud anti-virus (just an FYI in case it is important).

Here are the logs I was able to generate (also attached - and I've attached another Hijack This log just because...):

    Hiya zephyrsymphony,

    Continue as follows :-

    Step 1

We need to install the Recovery Console. This will help us restore your system in the event of a serious crash. It may also be useful in the future.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

    Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP2 or SP3, use the SP2 package.

Transfer all files you just downloaded, to the desktop of the infected computer.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

    • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
    • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console

    • At the next prompt, click 'No' to run the full ComboFix scan.

    Step 2

    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into it:

    Code:
    DirLook::
    c:\windows\system32\%APPDATA%
    File::
    c:\program files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe
    Registry::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

    Step 3

Go to Add/Remove Programs via Start > Control Panel and remove the following (if present)

    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Do not remove this one Java(TM) 6 Update 13

    Step 3

    Run ESET Online Scan
    • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
      ESET OnlineScan
    • Click the [IMG] button.
    • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

    • Double click on the [IMG] icon on your desktop.
    • Check [IMG]
    • Click the [IMG] button.
    • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    • Check [IMG]
    • Leave the tick out of remove found threats
    • Push the Start button.
    • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    • When the scan completes, push [IMG]
    • Push [IMG], and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    • Push the [IMG] button.
    • Push [IMG]
You can refer to this animation by neomage if needed.
Frequently asked questions available Here Please read them before running the scan.

Also be aware this scan can take between one and several hours to complete depending on the size of your system.

What i`d like in your reply :-

    • Log from Combofix
    • Log from ESET
    • System review, Issues?

    Kevin,

My apologies for the delay. I was feeling ill this weekend and it took me a few extra days to get back up and running.

Whatever you did, you fixed it! Thank you.

The Combofix log is attached but there was no log for ESET. The scanner reported that no threats were found (attached jpg of screenshot). I deleted all the Java stuff you suggested (they were all there).

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Connie

Still more to remove before we can clean up and remove our tools :-

    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into it:

    Code:

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Bill Kramer\Application Data\Luvaa
    c:\documents and settings\Bill Kramer\Application Data\Quuh
    c:\windows\system32\%APPDATA%

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Many thanks, again, Kevin. My neighbor reports that - apart from the hijack problem being gone -his computer is running much faster.

Following is the ComboFix log. I've also attached the .txt file in case the copy/paste is confusing to read.

    Hiya zephyrsymphony,

Logs look good and as your neighbor is giving a good report we can clean up our tools. We will still need to update to Service Pack 3 (SP3) at some point.

    Proceed as follows :-

    Step1

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it
    • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
    • Now type in Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
    • You will then recieve a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.
The above procedure will delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
    • Reset the clock settings.
    • Hide file extensions, if required.
    • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
    • Reset System Restore.

    Step 2

    • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop. Alternative mirror
    • Double click [IMG] icon to start the program.
If you are using Vista or Windows 7, please right-click and choose run as administrator
    • Then Click the big [IMG] button.
    • You will get a prompt saying "Begining Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
    • Restart your computer when prompted.

    Step 3

Remove the ESET Online Scanner components from your computer, start the Add or Remove Programs applet from Control Panel, select the ESET Online Scanner entry and click Remove. This will happen very quickly, only re-boot if requested.

    Step 4

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version.
For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system.
The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 23.

    • Go to Sun Java
    • Select Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 If using 64 bit OS Select Information about the 64-bit Java plug-in and follow prompts
    • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Reboot your computer

    Step 5

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions are vulnerable to attack and exploitation.

Please go to the link below to update.

Adobe Reader Untick the Free McAfee® Security Scan Plus (optional)

    Step 6

    Download and scan with CCleaner

    1. Use either one of the two free links below the Premium version.
    2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 24 hours"
    3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab:
    • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.
    • Make sure "Wipe free space" is unticked, this will dramatically increase scan time if selected.

    4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
    5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
    7. Click "exit" when done.

If all of the the above steps completed OK, continue as follows:

Download the full SP3 Installer from Here, save it to the Desktop.

Re-boot into Safe Mode and run the SP3 installer, once installed re-boot to normal mode. Check for windows updates, then re-boot. Keep doing that until there are no more updates.

Post back with a fresh HJT log, also tell me if there are any remaining issues.

    Kevin
