hi, below is my hijack this log. i've noticed lots of "bugs" on my system...i.e. generally slow startup and shutdown, not responding errors, script stops (firefox already increased stop time), lags where the browser screen turns black for a second, and the latest problem can't post links in wordpress with the html editor unless i do it manually. these could be all unrelated but i've used two different antivirus...avast and AVG...programs (not installed at the same time of course), adaware scan, microsoft virus scan, all come up clean. i've also defragmented, run CCleaner, restored the system to an earlier date, etc. just to list a few of the problems and things i've tried....maybe my computer is just dying a slow death, but i'd greatly appreciate if one of you experts out there could take a look at my hijack this log...thanks in advance...

Your computer appears to be a HP laptop.

What's the model name and model number?

What's the product number(P/N) on the sticker?

-------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully, you haven't been using the file and registry cleaning feature that's in AVG 2012 and CCleaner.

--------------------------------------------------------

Get rid of Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

hi, sorry yes i forgot to mention that.
it is a compaq presario CQ70-130ED
P/N FR350EA#ABH
running windows vista home

a little history i forgot to mention as well...about two years ago the laptop completely crashed and i couldn't get it to boot up no matter what i tried. we took it back to the retailer and they tried to send it to compaq for repairs. unfortunately it was about a month out of warranty so they sent it back and sent it to some other repair shop. i don't know what they did to it but it took like 3-4 months and a lot of phone calls asking where it was to finally get it back. i don't know what kind of software they used to repair it.

um...unfortunately yes i have used CCleaner to fix some of the registries. but it's usually only things like font problems, install problems, missing dlls that i've fixed. i don't remember seeing any serious issues there. plus i always have it make a backup before i do any repairs with CCleaner. i only just installed AVG yesterday to see if it could find anything. so i haven't done any cleaning with that. i'd previously been using avast. which has always come up clean as well on scans. unfortunately i'm unemployed and living overseas and can't afford to pay for virus protection or extended warranties. should i really delete lavasoft adaware? i only just installed it yesterday to see if it could diagnose any spyware that might be causing my problems.

also forgot to mention that a few months ago i completely reinstalled windows to get a fresh new start and fix some of the problems but it seems they're still persisting. i'm also running Adobe CS4 on my laptop. i know that could be some of the memory/lag problems. but the other problems mentioned were existing prior to CS4 being installed. except for the wordpress links problem that just started happening last weekend so it could just be something within wordpress. also pretty much since i've owned the computer i periodically hear a short beep-click sliding sound but i think that's just related to the head parking.

Let's see what's currently in that computer that may need to be uninstalled, updated, replaced, or added.

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

--------------------------------------------------------

Go here to download and SAVE AVG Remover(32bit) 2012.

We'll put it to use later.

Go here to download and SAVE Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1.1116.0.

Do NOT install it yet.

Uninstall Ad-Aware(by Lavasoft).

Update Adobe Reader 8.1.2 to Adobe Reader 10.1.1.

Uninstall AVG 2012, then restart the computer, then run the AVG removal tool to get rid of the leftover file and registry "debris" of AVG.

Install Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1.1116.0 to replace AVG.

Uninstall CCleaner, unless you REALLY know how to use it safely.

Uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Install the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.51.2.1300 and SUPERAntiSpyware 5.0.0.1136. Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.

------------------------------------------------------------

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, the number of them will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that EVERYTHING is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

------------------------------------------------------------

Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

Select the Quick Scan option, then click "Scan your Computer".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear and the number of them will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "Continue".

Make sure that EVERYTHING in the list is selected, then click "Remove Threats".

Click "OK - Finish".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, do so.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.

Click "View Scan Logs".

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Selected Log".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

The MBAM and SAS scan results were good. (y)

Don't worry about the HiJackThis "uninstall_list.txt" log showing some entries twice. It's just a glitch in how the log displays. It doesn't mean they've been installed twice. That couldn't happen anyway.

---------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp%

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

After you're done, restart the computer.

----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste it here.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in the startup entries that I've highlighted in bold text.

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Restart.

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list clearly.

Double-click on the entries that I've highlighted in bold text. This will bring up their properties window.

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual. Click Apply - OK afterwards to lock in the setting change.

After you're all done, restart the computer.

Now that I know you can submit a screenshot of the startup list, scroll down the list and submit a screenshot of the rest of the checked entries so I can see EVERYTHING that's checked.

-----------------------------------------------------

These entries can be unchecked:

StartMen Application

HP QuickPlay

Windows Defender

HP Health Check Scheduler

hpwuSchd Application

The 3 Intel entries.
