Problems started when I found I either was blocked from getting to popular search engines or, once there, I would try to search and nothing would happen. On occasion I would instead wind up on the Incredifind search engine home page.

I downloaded Spybot - Search & Destroy, searched for updates, had it check for problems, then fixed everything it found.

After that, I found my browsers (IExplorer & Netscape Navigator)wouldn't function at all and I could no longer access email (Outlook Express). Email had been fine before. When I open Internet Explorer, for about 30 seconds it says at lower left that it's looking for www.yahoo.com, which is my home page. Then it says it's looking for www.incredifind.com. But it never finds anything and just sits there continuing to look. If I type an address into the address bar, it looks for that but can't find that either. Navigator is similar; I get a message that it can't find the page that's set as my home page. Outlook Express gives me a message that it can't find my mail server.

I tried using spybot to restore everything that it had previously deleted, in order to try to get email access back, but that didn't change the status as I've described it above at all. So I reran spybot and once again deleted everything it found.

I then ran Hijack This. Here's the log file:

I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give me with how to proceed from here. In addition to what to fix with Hijack This, I assume you'll tell me to run a virus scan. I'd appreciate your thoughts on which one to use. I ran Norton Antivirus, but my version is badly out of date. If there's a good free one available, I'd rather use that than pay to update NAV. Thank you so much in advance.

I've already downloaded the Symantec "Qhosts Removal Tool" and the Microsoft IE patch as suggested by dvk01, and I was going to run them on my computer at home this evening. Should I do what you have suggested instead, or were you just saying it would be easier to do it that way. If it doesn't matter much, I'd prefer to stick with Plan A which might fix it tonight. The way you've suggested I'd have to post the new log from my office tomorrow and wait for tomorrow night. But I'll wait if you're saying your approach would be better. I really appreciate your help.

You still need the removal tool & the IE patch, but what firman is saying is that the updated Hijackthis also loks for an additional hosts file that the scum have hidden in C:\windows\help\hosts and allows you to correct that one if it is there that the removal tool doesn't

I ran the Symantec "Qhosts Removal Tool" and the Microsoft IE patch as suggested by dvk01. The removal tool did say that it found and was deleting one Trojan.Qhosts file. Then I ran the beta version of Hijack This as suggested by flrman1.

In the log file, which I have pasted below, one item jumped out at me: "010 - Broken internet access because of LSP provider 'lsp.dll' missing." It seemed obvious from the detailed information about this item that this was the likely cause of my internet connection problems, so I went ahead and had Hijack This fix the problem. It was successful, and now my browser and email app are working again.

I do have a remaining problem. When I try to go to Google or Lycos, I wind up on a screen that has the name and logo "cPanel" and the message "There is no website configured at this address.

    Here's my Hijack This log:

Download and run LSPFix to correct the O10 entry Broken internet access because of LSP provider 'lsp.dll' missing
    www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip

    then
    download AdAware 6 181
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and tick "Automaticly try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it.

    then
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Thank you. Please note that, as I explained in more detail in my previous post, I've already successfully fixed the "010 - Broken internet access" problem using Hijack This, so I assume I don't need to run LSPFix.

It might be cured but it was still on your last log so it's worth doing to be on the safe side

it's a remnant from the shop nav parasite

Here are a few remaining questions:

    1. When I ran Hijack This this time (but not the previous times), it left a whole bunch of backup files on my desktop. Do I need to keep them?

    2. The instructions for the Symantec Removal Tool told me to turn System Restore off. I found that it was already off. Could that be for some good reason, or should I just turn it on?

    3. Ad-aware said it wasn't able to delete a bunch of objects from C:/_restore/temp. Do I need to worry about that?

    4. Ad-aware bombed out when it seemed to be done. I got a warning that it had caused an error in <unknown> and will now close. Anything I should do about that?

    Thanks again.

Sorry about that, you must have got overlooked somehow

    1. backup files should be in the folder that hjt ran from, so if they are on the desktop that must be where you ran hjt from, ...no you don't need the files now & can delete them

    2. turn on system restore now you are ok

    3. don't know why you have that folder, it looks like a part of system restore, but ME restore always had a few bugs and from reports is not the most reliable

    4. if it happens again post an eror message, but all 9x based systems have crashes from time to time and I shouldn't think that this was any exception
